Veggies before and after VSG

 I had an epiphany  today!
I see a lot of posts about vegetable consumption after VSG, and consensus is there is just no room for them, so don't eat them, stick to protein.
And that was very counter-intuitive for me, since all my life I've been told to eat veggies! The more the better, they are great they are good, it was always about the veggies. I don't particularly like them, but I've been trying to eat as much as possible. So, now, when I hear "no more veggies, you don't need them", it kind of goes against everything I have learned about nutrition up to this point and made me cringe.
And then, boom! I got it! I figured it out!
Veggies are low calorie per volume food.  So, when you have a normal size stomach, to feel satisfied you need to fill it with something, you can't eat enough protein to fill it, it's too calorie dense, so are the grains and fruits,  so veggies is the perfect healthy filler - large volume & few calories. And of course all the fiber, nutrients and vitamins.

But after VSG, you have a tiny stomach, and you still need to eat the same amount of protein as before, which takes all the space, no room for "filler"any more. You still need the fiber and vitamins, hence the multi-vitamin and stool softeners or fiber supplements. But veggies are now optional.

Whew! Glad I figured it out before my surgery, as I am one of those people that have to understand WHY I need to do something before I can actually do it.

Yep!! It's not that you don't need them- they are great for us... it's just that for many of us, there's no physical way to get them in in any quantity (a Tbs or two is really nothing..) when for at least the first 6mo or so, many of us are having a hard time just eating enough dense protein to fulfill requirements.. when all I could eat was less than 2oz at a sitting.. veggies couldn't compete with the shrimp!

Some of us even have a plan restrictions working against us- requirements of only 3 solid meals a day, no snacking or some-such? I never could do that and get enough cals/protein in me. I'd eat at least 4x a day, plus shakes.. now more like 5 or 6 a day plus one shake a day still.. a couple of those meals now are veggie heavy now since they do taste good, and are good for you!

 You can juice them...

Just got a Ninja and for sure it would not be hard to juice a day's worth of  veggies.  Maybe not all at once like I did, but it is doable.  Net carbs was only 2.  This would not be something a newly sleeved person should do though.

I asked my NUT about juicing and she didn't recommend it, said the better part of veggies (fiber) getting thrown away, so better eat them in entirety. I guess juicing is mostly for vitamins and micro nutrients, which is also good! :-)

With the Ninja, the whole veggie goes in and you use the fiber.  My juicer, on the other hand, separates that out.  This is why I picked up the Ninja....

I haven't had the surgery, yet, but I've been thinking about the fruits/veggies thing too and it is counter-intuitive for me too.  I figure there are lots of people who eat fruits, veggies, etc....AND take a multi-vitamin.....so, ya, it still leaves me wondering about it....I want to be able to eat veggies/fruit because I think the antioxidants, etc....are really important.  I don't know how it look, post-op, because we're all a bit different...but I HOPE to be able to eat them post-op.
