Low Vitamin D??? ANYONE???
Well I was informed at my 6 month post op that my Vit D was low. They told me that I could take Vit D 1000 IU 10 tablets five times a week or they could call in the 50,000 tablets to my pharmacy. I asked for the prescription strenght so that I would not have to take so many. Well they never called them in and I really forgot about it. Well lately I started having a lot of lightheadedness upon standing. Everything goes black but the center of my eyes then a few seconds later that feeling goes away. I emailed the nurse again. There is a new nurse that called and said that she was very alarmed because of my vit d was so low and it seems to be dropping lower and lower at each appointment. She called in 50,000 instead of taking 1 per week she wants me to take it 3 times a week. HOLY COW ....why so much? Anybody else have similar stories??
i found out i had low vid D from the labs they drew right before surgery. My surgeon on my 10 day post op visit prescribed some vid D my level was 30 I read a lot on here and on the main board they were saying that the oil based Vit D little green oil pills don't really work very well. They recommended Dry D3 and i got some from vitalady.com i take 5k twice a day with my calcium, my levels went up to 50 in a month, i don't know what my levels are now but im still taking it so im sure its great. Vit D deficiency can be very bad so stay on top of it and good luck :o) Jeani
Yup... I have really low vitamin D as well. I was prescribed 50,000IU weekly like you. I picked up the prescription and realized it's 4 pills (month's supply) for a $5 copay. I never refilled it and purchased Biotech Pharmacal Vitamin D3-50 - it's 100 capsules for $20 on Amazon.com... way cheaper than by prescription... and it's dry form vs. the little green pills I was prescribed. Dry form is better.
I've been taking it for ~3 months now... I don't have any more energy like the Dr said I might... I was really hoping for that since I'm tired/lethargic all the time.
Hope you start feeling better!

Got the same feedback from my surgeon's office today when they reviewed my bloodwork... not surprising though, I DO live in Washington state (we only see the sun in the summer).
I actually got that same info from a previous lab I did for a different doctor and had just picked up Vitamin D drops... they're 4,000 IUs per drop, you do one every other day. Totally tasteless, super easy. I wonder why they're prescribing 2,000 IU tablets for WLS patients when you could just do the drops? I picked mine up at the local Vitamin Shoppe.
