RNY reversal and revision to the Sleeve

Thank you for your kind words. I'm scared beyond belief, with that said though, I trust my surgeon, his credentials, and experience. I understand everyone's advice and concerns, I just needed support and advice if anyone had any. I will definitely post an update when I am able.

How long have you been a member of the bariatric community? Those of us telling her to do more research have been here a long long time. I have been here 8+ years. I have seen many people post about their RNY to DS experiences (which would be very similar to a RNY-VSG conversion). Many have not been good. People who now will have problems their entire lives due to the surgeon who did not have experience doing what he was supposed to do. A personal friend of mine has been in and out of the hospital at least 10 times a year since her revision. She will probably continue this cycle the rest of her life. Her insides will never function normally again.

Just because a surgeon is great at one type of bariatric surgery does NOT make him an expert at another. I stand by my advice to the OP. She needs to do more research.

I didn't see anyone telling her to run. I saw a lot of people telling her to be cautious, explore all avenues, and research the heck out of this. It is a really, really big deal.

Like Laura said, those who have been around for a while have seen some horror stories. And seen a lot of people that shrugged off advice and thought this kind of revision was no bigger deal than the original surgery. It really, really is. In that context, I don't see how the advice offered was mean, even a tiny bit. I think telling someone to ignore good advice and go ahead and do this, with no understanding of what's involved, or the consequences, is just plain cruel.

I had a wonderful surgeon. He is director of the program, done a gazillion surgeries, president of the ASMBS, researcher on numerous projects in bariatrics. I would NOT consider him to be my surgeon if I needed someone to do a revision from RNY to VSG or DS. I'd be getting my ass on a plane to see one of the small and very select group of surgeons who do this sort of thing routinely.

11 + years in this community is why I advised the OP to seek a vetted surgeon ...   she really is putting her life on the line and I couldn't live with myself if I patted her hand and "there, there'd" her.    This is like asking a podiatrist to perform a heart transplant.

Thanks for your input.

please get a second opinion from a doctor/practice unaffiliated with your original surgeon. the surgery you are describing is difficult and rarely done. it would be a very last resort if it were me.

your profile says you are in NY. i don't know which part of the state you're in but perhaps you could get down to NYC and see Dr. Mitchell Roslin. he's a well known bariatric surgeon vetted in the DS community, and one of few surgeons who has experience doing RNY to DS revisions (which is not dissimilar from what you're proposing... in fact its more complicated than going from RNY to VSG). check out these websites: DS Facts & Roslin's website

you are right to be scared and i would absolutely get another opinion about the surgery AND take Hala's route and look into seeing an endocrinologist.  best of luck to you.

Thank you. I've discussed this with my husband and will be seeking a second opinion. :)

Glad you are going to do more research on this... sound really scary-risky and a lot of potential for you to suffer even more. You are just over two years post op. Wow, not sure what your Bariatric food list is or your Bariatric menus are either. How's the rest of your blood chemistry?

I am RNY since Feb-2013 but been on this site since 2005. I maintained 65 grams of carbs pre op to lose weight and about ½ that post op still. I did find, beginning post op, that even with a 1/2 or 1/4 piece of bread, pasta, carbohydrates stuff period... and even tiny bits of sugar got me hyper to hypo really fast... crashing and lots of misery with various shades of dumping syndrome (never the same way twice so far).

I regularly stick to protein and dense veggies, not even any type of grains; no types of rice and no dairy... converts to sugar really easily too. I might add only a teaspoon and on a medium carb day a tablespoon of legumes to everything else. It's what I've learned to maintain my weight loss. Keep researching since this surgery either standard or revision is a big risk that impacts your life forever. Best wishes.
