Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I felt trapped by food and was addicted to all the negative aspects that were associated with it. I was always searching to fill voids of emptiness within myself by filling my mouth. Stress wasn't my best friend but Ice Cream and fast food was. I searched for answers in various forms of diet and regulation, alternative processes and nothing seemed to work and then I found my answer at a seminar. Attending the seminar changed my life. Knowing that I failed at everything I had tried, I soon would hope it would change for the better.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I was afraid of being judge by people who knew me and didn't know me. It was a very hard decision but when I look back to 4 1/2 years ago I feel like I did what I needed to do. I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, border line diabetic and a laundry list of other things.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

My life today is so different than when I began my journey in July 2009. I can run with my son and play all the sports with him. Saturdays I am no longer the mom who wants to stop. I don't sit on the sidelines or hide from others. Instead I am shutting and cheering my son on during his games. I can shop in regular stores and feel comfortable looking in the mirror. For the first time in YEARS I am wearing dresses and skirts again. I always hide behind pants and long tops. Now I go out with friends for the girls nights out and I don't hide in the background. I couldn't do it with out the love and support of my family. My surgeon Dr. Neil Floch of Fairfield County Bariatrics gave me the "tools" to succeed. The time of people who he put into place was there for me and still is today.
