Question:
What will I need at home after surgery?
I am collecting items that I think I will need at home once I am through surgery. I would love any feedback from those who have had surgery as to what items they felt that was most important to them or items they wished they had and didnt. — Pamela W. (posted on November 9, 2001)

I was glad to have new measuring cups to measure out my ounces. I also had
the little coated baby spoons to encourage small bites. Disposable bowls,
cups and the little bathroom cups were very handy. I used so many dishes
throughout the day and it was great to just throw them away. I carried a
timer when I walked. A small pillow to hold when you cough is great. Some
new magazines to read will help pass the time when you're not walking. Good

Dial Gold antibacterial soap, a warm throw or comforter to cover yourself
while watching tv or reading. I got one of the "smart blankets"
from Walmart for about $25. It is an electric throw blanket that doesn't
overheat and supposedly "knows" where you need extra warmth. One
more thing: a mini-food processor. Now is the time to indulge yourself
with some pampering! You are worth it!

Sugar Free popsicle brand popsicles. These were great, when my mouth was
so dry and water just didn't do it these helped me. But first and foremost
a great support person!!!

I used my Mom's hosptial bed and she slept in the chair. I felt bad about
it, but I was in so much pain that it really helped. It would have been
nice to have had it for a couple weeks, however I used it around 7 or 8
days as I did'nt want her to be without it any longer than possible.
So if you have the money to rent one, I don't think you'll be sorry.
Oh, another thing, buy an abdomial binder (if you are having the Open). I
never thought of it. I wish I had had one in the hospital and of course at
home. It was the incision that hurt the worst, not my insides. So I'd say
get a hospital bed and an abdomial binder.
