I had a pretty bad anxiety attack back in October, and my surgery was Dec.4, so I too had the anxiety hit me early. I went to a Patient First Clinic which treated the anxiety, gave me a perscription for Xanax. Surprisingly, for me the anxiety peaked back in October, and I didn't have much axiety at all leading up to the surgery.

I like you had had anxiety/panic in the past but nothing for close to 5 years, but since surgery is such a BIG deal, I think it's normal to be a bit anxious about it, but with people like us with a history of axiety problems it just gets a bit out of hand. Go see a doc and get it treated, there is no need to suffer!

I think it is entirely normal to be anxious about the surgery and the outcome. It just shows that you know how serious and life-changing this is. Two suggestions, talk to your PCP about an anti-anxiety medication and, if you're not already in a support group, find a support group where you can discuss your fears. It really does help to talk things out. Good luck and hope things get better for you soon.

Of course it is normal to have anxiety about the surgery. It's a big surgery, big changes in your life, and there are all those people who have to tell you every scary thing they've ever heard in your last 2 days pre-op! Tune them out. Definitely get treatment. But I just thought I'd tell you I have no history at all of anxiety attacks but I think I had one that lasted all day the Saturday before my surgery on Thursday! I couldn't stop crying. Couldn't stop thinking all sorts of bad things were going to happen, that sort of thing. For me it passed with a good night's sleep, but I do understand that for you it might not pass off so easily. Get treatment and don't beat yourself up over anything. Also -- just smile and leave when peope want to tell you horror stories, if you can. You really don't need that! BTW, I came through surgery so very well I almost feel like I never had any, (except I can't eat so much now!) and had very little soreness, let alone pain. You'll be fine.
