Question:
Any Post ops at goal weight discouraged with society?

I am watching Ananda on TV and I am really upset at what I'm hearing. I have lost 180 lbs and am a size 8/10 now. According to the entertainment/fashion industry I am still plus size!!! I feel like I have come so far and am happy with me- which I know is whats truly important...but all my life I wanted to be looked at by soceity as normal. Now I finally feel normal and thought I had arrived and now I find that I haven't~~ I am still plus size! Does anyone else feel the pressure- of even as far as we have come that we will still never be small enough?    — Stephanie E. (posted on August 14, 2002)

Don't be so hard on yourself. You are doing great and I am sure you look great. You are comparing yourself to the anorexic chicks that are on the sitcoms. They do not look healthy and I am sure most of them are not. Just enjoy your size and know that you have come along way. I will be lucky to ever get in a size 10 but am hoping and that will make me happy. Don't let that nonsense get you down. Compare yourself to normal everyday people and you will see that size is 8-12. You are doing just fine. Congratulations on the weight loss. RK

NOT ME! I am very happy in an 8. I am the same size as Catherine Zeta-Jones (who is beautiful!) and a size smaller than Kate Winslet (ditto!). I am healthy and well proportioned. The skinnie-minnies at work tell me I look great. The fashion industry has operated on a platform of denial for years. Supermodels are NOT the norm. The average woman is about 5'5" tall and a size 12 or 14. If you get discouraged, go to a large public place and sit in one place for a while. Look at how many women are bigger than you and how many are smaller. I'll bet you that a lot more of them are bigger. Now have someone trusted point out a person who is similar to you in size and body type. I'll bet they look GREAT! Now kwitcher worryin' and go out and enjoy being a skinnie-minnie! =)

I'm not at goal yet but I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth! Do you really want to compare yourself to those fake boobs skeletal women? Ewwwwww! If not, then please don't be upset & discouraged over it. It's not worth comparing yourself to people who get paid to eat 2 celery sticks a day (if they eat at all?). Be happy with your own accomplishments and good health! That's the best we can strive for. :o)

The women in magazine ads are put through something called a sci-tex (sp?) machine which elongates them and makes them look thinner. And with TV..think of all the 'magic' they can do. The previous poster is correct, they are NOT the norm (and of course big fake boobies make them look thinner). I am 5'10", 198 pounds and in a size 14. I am so thrilled..I don't care if I get any smaller. People say that I am 'normal' now, and that's the way I feel. Society has so much wrong with it...and I guffaw at 8/10 being plus-size....puh-leeeeese, how can they say that? That's part of the reason I watch nothing but Nickleodeon and CNN. :)

8/14/02 My favorite answer has to be, due to changing size guidelines, Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 back in the day, and would be considered a size 8 today, the same size as you. Whose size would you rather wear, an anorexic model's or Marilyn Monroe?

I wqonder if this unreasonable standard causes MO in young girls? We all know dieting causes long term weight gain... Society has girls pressed to diet. MO is now at runaway rates. I think theres a sad connection...

Are you are saying your "happy with me" but some Amanda (sorry don't know who she is) decides what's norm or what's acceptable and now your NOT happy with you? Think back 180 pounds ago, would you be elated if you were a size 8/10? Would you think this was the ultimate in goals? Don't let someone elses opinion rob you of your happiness. You are a dream come true and have to tune out anyone that says your not.

If size 8 is fat, then call me tubby!!! How come when I now go to buy my size 8 clothes, the majority of the clothes on the rack are sizes 14, 16 and 18?? I can hardly ever find a size 8 on the rack. All of the clothes on the rack are too BIG!!! Trust me, a size 8 is NOT big and I'm content to be in it. Hopefully in another month or so, I'll be down to a size 6 which is also another impossible clothing size to find. Remember, stores but clothes based on supply and demand so there must be a heck of a demand for sizes 14 through 18.

At 350lbs and wearing a size 28 to 32, how I wish I was a size 14, 12, 10, etc. I am "DYING" to get where you are. As the song goes, "Don't worry be happy", and remember where you are coming from. Congratulations on your weight loss. :)
