I cant tell you what to expect from your surgeon as each one different, but I can tell you about my experience. I went in for my consult and Dr Herron sat me down and explained each procedure to me fully. Afterwards, we went over any questions I had. After that, I went into an examining room and changed into one of those cheesy gowns. He came in, showed me where the incisions would be, felt for legs for clots and listened to my lungs. He then scheduled me for surgery (pending insurance approval) It was simple!

Hi! On my first visit I didn't have any tests done, I watched a video of my doctor explaining the surgery and about Obesity being a disease. Then I met with him, and he went over all of my info, and dictated a letter to send to the insurance company. He answered questions that I had, and told me about the risks, and about follow up care. The only other things I had done that day, where urine, BP check, weight, and they took some blood. I hope this helps some. Peggy

My surgeon made me meet with his counselor first so see if I was a candidate. Then he met with me to introduce himself, explain the surgery, question me a little, then I had to make another appt with his dietician. She had to drill me to see if I would be a good patient and follow my Doc's instructions and follow my nutrition requirements. Then I had to let them know if I wanted him to be my surgeon which I actually told him when I met him that I wanted him & that I was ready. Now all my required meetings are done, and I am waiting on him to call me and say they sent the insurance paperwork. There being a little slow with this, I have to keep calling and letting messages. Once I receive ins approval, the surgery date is set, then I will be examined by the surgeon and he will begin ordering preop tests if he needs to.

Every surgeon is different. With my first visit, we sat down and talked, talked and talked. This is your chance to "interview your surgeon" as well as him/her to interview you. So it is more of a info session and for you to develop a clear picture of what to expect. The biggest thing is bringing in your questions and knowledge of research about the surgery. If you decide to let this doc do the surgery, at the very least, he may order blood and lab work to get the ball to rolling. Good luck, Jan
