Question:
Anyone get a perm Pre Op

I would like to get a perm before going into surgery, Im scheduled for Sept 18. But I, wondering if it would be a good idea. Has anyone had any problems with the perm falling out from drugs/stress etc from surgery? Thanks!    — Tricee (posted on September 8, 2000)

I think that a perm would be fine pre-op or post-op. I am a hairdresser, and for years I have heard that surgery may cause it not to take, or the curl may fall out post-op. I believe Dr.s are the ones telling patients this. Perms have changed alot over the years. I have given plenty of themto peolple pre-op and post-op of many different surgeries and have not seen a problem with this.However I would reccomend a good conditioner post op ( a leave in verses a rinses out ) I have experienced anesthesia being very drying to the hair and also can take the shine out for some time.

HELLO I HAD MY HAIR PERMED (SPIRAL PERM) 3 DAYS BEFORE I HAD SURGERY AND HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT. IT HAS BEEN 6 MONTHS AND I STILL HAVE LOTS OF CURLS. (I HAVE LONG HAIR).

I had a perm right before surgery, and by 2 weeks postop I was wishing I hadn't done it. It was OK while I was in the hospital, but not so good postop. My hair got so dry and dull looking after surgery. I think it was a combination of the perm, change in nutrition, and the physical stress of surgery. My hair is blond, baby fine and quite short. It was like a heap of straw on my head for a couple of months. What does your hairdresser say? I would think it would have alot to do with the nature and texture of your hair. Good luck!

Hi! I am half-Native American, so I had very straight hair all my life. Well, following surgery, my hair did shed quite a bit, but now my hair is CURLY! It is the strangest thing. Maybe you won't need a perm at all! ;)

I think that is great!!!! we are both having surgery the same day. Mine is at 7:30 a.m. What is your time? In answer to your question: YES, you can, only BEFORE surgery! and NOT after, because of the anesthesia. I have a appointment for September 12th, for a Perm, that Tuesday before surgery. P. Hair is composed of dead cells. The hair in the folicle is alive. How well a perm works prior to your surgery depends on several factors; your nutritional status, any disease states such as thyroid disease, normal states such as pregnancy and some medications you may be taking. Your hair preop is an indication of your preop health. Your hair will not be affected until your hair grows out. Always remember that a permanent wave is not an exact science no matter when you have them because your body chemistry changes slightly over time. If you like your hair permed...indulge yourself.
