Question:
Almost two years out, am having severe pain after drinking certain liquids.

Ever since surgery, if I try to drink certain drinks such as splenda-sweetened grape Kool-Aid, sugar-free Tang, even Fruit 2O, after a few swallows I start getting this feeling of pressure around my ribs, then the pressure increases until I am sweating, panting and in severe pain. I have to lie on my bed, panting for breath, until the pain passes, which is usually about 3 to 4 minutes, but it FEELS like HOURS!! I am guessing that this is some sort of spasm, but I am at a loss as to why it happens! (I know I can just not drink flavored drinks, but I am down to just decaf coffee and water, and I would really like something different now and then!) Anyone else have these symptoms or know what causes them????????? Thanks    — T. 263 (posted on May 27, 2003)

Sounds like you could be "dumping". Perhaps your body can't handle those types of drinks with a certain type of sweetner....I would stay away from them and find something else entirely. I can't drink certain liquids too without feeling sick. Anything else you're having trouble eating and drinking?

Hi, if I were you, I would call your doctor and go get this checked out if you are in this kind of pain, cuz it could be a number of things like your gallbladder if you haven't already got that taken out, or you could be have an ulcer or just gas that is build up over time. But you do not want it to end up getting worse, so caal your doc I rather be safe than soory! Good Luck keep us posted on how you are doing!!

Origional poster here: I had my gallbladder out back in 1982, so I figure that's not the problem. I use Splenda in my coffee and protein drinks, and have never had a problem with it. So far, only Propel Fitness Water Lemon flavor (with 2gm sugar), Sugar Free Tang (with Equal), grape Kool-Aid (with Splenda), and Fruit2 O Citrus (with Splenda) have done this to me! I have had no other problems with any foods or drinks. Needless to say, I have not been drinking the ones that cause the problem anymore, but it has made me real nervous about trying to drink new stuff!!

Although many people can use Splenda (sucralose) without any problems there are others who exhibit a wide array of symptoms including a food poisioning type reaction, pain in joints, all over body pain and I've even read of chest pain that seems like a heart attack. Here's a URL you can check out for more information. http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm You may want to try products with other artificial sweetners or just stay away from the sweet stuff altogether.
