Question:
If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, does this dis-qualify you for WLS?

I just found out today I do have sleep apnea. How long will I have to use the cpap before I can be considered for a surgery date?    — Donna Harrison (posted on September 20, 2002)

I have had sleep apnea for 9 years. It will not disqualify you for weight-loss surgery - indeed, many people have the weight loss surgery in the hopes that losing the weight will cause their sleep apnea to go away. As for how long you have to be on the CPAP machine, that is a question for your surgeon...JR (open RNY 07/17 -83 pounds)

I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea--my surgeon requires use of the CPAP machine for 30 days before surgery-

I just had WLS on 9/12/02 and have severe sleep apnea. I did need to take my CPAP machine to the hospital to use while there.

Sleep apnea can help with the approval process...studies and real live people have shown that the reduction of weight can "cure" sleep apnea. Good luck ~CAE~

Because I did have sleep apnea is really the only reason I was approved for surgery, no other real complications from my weight for me. I never used the cpap machine, so I guess it really is all up to the doctor. Good luck! Post op 7 months here and down 113#'s!!

I have severe sleep apnea and have used a CPAP for twelve years. I had to take my machine to the hospital. I did have some difficulty with keeping my oxygen level high enough, even with the machine, so they added oxygen to it and I wore it all the time. I was fine after I left the hospital. It did help me get approved for the surgery in the first place.
