Question:
I AM A PRE-OP TYPE 2 DIABETIC AND WHENEVER MY BLOOD SUGAR

GETS TO LOW I EITHER EAT SOMETHING HIGH IN CARBS (SUGAR)TO BRING IT BACK UP AND I AM GOING TO HAVE A RNY AND I KNOW THAT CARBS AND SUGARS CAUSE PEOPLE TO DUMP. I KNOW THE CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT MY DIABETES MAY BECOME BETTER OR GO AWAY AFTER I LOSE SOME OF THE WEIGHT. BUT MY QUESTION IS WHEN I AM A NEW POSTIE AND IF I GET A LOW BLOOD SUGAR, WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO IF I EAT A CARB (SUGAR) THEN I WILL PROBABLY DUMP WHICH I GATHER IS NOT PLEASANT BUT NEITHER IS A LOW BLOOD SUGAR AND IF MY BLOOD SUGARS GETS TO LOW THEN IT BECOMES A LIFE AND DEATH MATTER THEN. CAN ANYONE ANSWER PLEASE, I WAS PLANNING ON ASKING DR BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD ASK YOU GUYS ALSO, SINCE PROBABLY SOMEONE HAS BEEN THERE.    — Grace H. (posted on June 8, 2002)

Hi! I too am a type 2 diabetic. I am 7 weeks post-op and my blood sugars are normal. I am now on no medications for my diabetes. I feel so much better. If you were to have a problem with low blood sugar then you would drink 100% fruit juice with no sugar added. Natural fruit juices have not bothered me. I think you'll find that this tool is the best thing to help us become healthy. May God bless you on your journey. Lots of love and hugs, Amy

I am also type 2 diabetic and since the surgery have had normal blood sugar. Every one is different. I don't have the dumping syndrome everyone talks about so in a way it is a blessing cause who wants to be sick, but in a different way it isn't. I have to watch my carbs still because it can hinder the weight loss. But my doctor suggested unsweetened applejuice if mine gets low. just one drink of it.

On the slim chance that you do have a problem with low blood sugar, here is what happened to me. I have Type 1 diabetes, so lows will always be a possibility for me. I had my first one while I was in the hospital. At about 10:30 am, my sugar was 51. I had 4 oz of juice, 4 oz of milk and a couple of squeezes from a tube of glucose gel. At 11:15 my sugar was 62. I ended up having to have some glucose in my IV to get my sugar back up. I had a similar episde a couple of nights later. Yesterday, when I saw my endocrinologist, she told me that I will need to use either glucose tablets or glucose gel since they absorb in the mouth and not in the stomach. I have to say that this was a VERY important learning experience for me.

I too am a type II. After my surgery (almost a year ago!) I had a lot of low blood sugar readings. My lowest was 50. My doctor took me off all of my medication for diabetes and drinking orange juice does the trick to bringing it right back up. Eating small portions frequently is the key to mainting a therapeutic insulin level. Good Luck =)
