Question:
What is the likelyhood of death from surgery?

A friend of mine that had surgery 3 months ago passed away this morning..... she will have an autopsy to determine death, but I am worried I am a month post op, and want to know if the likelyhood is from her surgery or something else. I thought I was over the worry of death from surgery.    — [Anonymous] (posted on December 17, 2001)

Condolences on your friend. Theres no way to know what happened till the autopsy reports are in. Most complications occur immediately after surgery, and the overall death rate is well under 1%. I would follow the situation and let us know what occured. I heard of a post op having a heart attack a few months out, and he survived. His cardiologist said it would of been much worse without surgery. Lots of us have health problems co morbidities. DONT panic its a VERY small risk, or we would of heard of it here. M0ore important if any post op feels bad / wrong its always best to call your surgeon. Thats what they get paid for.

SO VERY SAD TO LEARN OF THE LOSS OF YOUR FRIEND. IF SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THIS SIGHT, I'M SURE SHE WAS EVERYONE'S FRIEND. MAY HAPPY MEMORIES REPLACE THE SADNESS IN YOUR HEART. PLEASE TELL HER FAMILY IF THEY WOULD LIKE A MEMORIAL POSTED IN HER MEMORY, THEY WILL HAVE TO CONTACT THEM. THEY HAVE HAD A FEW PEOPLE PASS AWAY THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS FROM THE SURGERY. I TRIED TO POST MEMORIALS FOR THEM, BUT ONLY FAMILY MEMBERS CAN DO THAT. MAY HOPE AND PEACE TOUCH YOUR HEART. UNABLE TO EMAIL YOU PERSONALLY SINCE YOU ARE ANNONYMOUS.........

Death is a risk of this surgery, as any surgical procedure. We signed all the documents of the risks, and found out too late that DISCRIMINATION, MEDICAL NEGLECT, and SUBSTANDARD HEALTHCARE is also a risk. Please read my story as part of your research.
