Question:
My doctor's office called and told me that BCBS/Blue Choice is now requiring

proof of 'supervised diets' such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. I am wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this. I have joined them all over the years but have no way to prove it.. Any info or advice will be appreciated!!    — Pam B. (posted on August 18, 2003)

Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, TOPS, etc. should all have records of the dates that you were a member. Try getting a corporate phone number off of there websites. Other than that, I can tell you that I have BCBS of Illinois PPO and after many (and I mean MANY) phone calls and letters, they decided that they would be satisfied with just my own personal log that I provided them giving dates and results of each of the times I was a member of those organizations. Good luck to you!

I had to have a Dr. supervised diet for 12 to 18 months. My ins. was BCBS----PPO.

I had BCBS/ Health Options HMO which had the same regulation. I had a years worth of PCP records which mentioned my weight and co-morbidities and counseling about my weight. Then I summarized my past weight loss clinic memberships and results. I also had my current OB/GYN and prior OB/GYN send letters of neccessity and old records about my weight co-morbidities. This worked for me-- and on the first attempt. I wish you the best of luck!!!

I have HMO with BC/BS of Ga and they also told me on the initial submittal that that was the reason for the denial, "No proof of supervised weight loss". I submitted my appeal with letters from my heart Dr, foot Dr, gyno, and PCP that they all agreed this was a necessity. I was approved in 3 weeks.

You should be able to get copies of your records from most companies. I was able to get mine from Jenny Craig clear back from 1992. You can contact them at 1-800-JennyCares. I was also able to get my records from LA Weight Loss, Alpha Weight Loss, and my doctor's office. Make some calls. You'll be surprised at how helpful everyone is. Good luck to you!
