Question:
What should I be doing?

I have my 1st consult in Sept., but I would like advice on what I should do to speed up my actual surgery date, like anything that I should be doing, I feel like I should be doing something. I really just want to be able to give him everything and be set for a date I tried to see if I could be put on a cancellation list, but the nurse informed me that there was none. Advice, please:)    — Tanya F. (posted on June 26, 2003)

One thing you can do that might help is find out what kind of info your insurance company requires and try to have as much of that information with you at your consult as possible. Do they require a diet history or letter from PCP? You can get those things ready and reduce the approval delays not having the info might cause. Best of luck to you on your journey! 02/04/03 -100#

Kimberly is correct...find out exactly what your insurance requires in order to be approved. Do they require supervised weight loss? A diet history (perhaps you need to get records from various diet plans you've been on)? A sleep study or gallbladder ultrasound? If you have sleep apnea, do they require that you're on a cpap for x-amount of time before surgery? There are many things you can be doing while you wait. I would especially find out if a doctor-supervised weight loss program for x-amount of time is required...you can get a jump start on that now. There just seems to be a lot of postings lately about this being a requirement for several insurances. Hugs, Joy

My insurance required that I had 6 months of physicial supervised diets. A lot of them are requiring that now. I think it would be a good idea to make sure you at least go by your regular physicians office and get weighed and have it documented monthly. that way if you do need 6 months of weigh ins, you will have them. It would not hurt and it is very likely that it will be needed. Good luck.

Tanya My consult date is also set for Sept. I suggest you keep on calling the Doctor's office from time to time to check for appointment cancellations. Also, check to see if the surgeon requires pre-op patients to be participating in a weight loss program. It is part of the criteria of WLS Program at my hospital. I decided to take advantage of this time to get my in the best possible shape for surgery. Just in cast there is a surgery cancellation then I'm ready to roll! Good Luck Anne
