Look up the profile of Nicole Wheeler. Her insurance denied her because she is 19 (6 mos shy of being 20) and they only approve if youa re at least 20 years old. I think she turns 20 in January of next year, so she doesn't have long to wait now. Her story is interesting. She explains what she's done to fight her insurance. Hope this helps!

Hey Melise, I'm 19 and have been researching the RNY for 3 yrs now, I've been overweight all my life, and am beginning to experience health problems due to the extra weight. But when I had my first consultation with my surgeon I was really scared that I would be denied because of my age, but that is not the case.....I am now waiting for a surgery date for February, and cannot wait. I think that if you show a certain amount of maturity and responsibility, to prove that you are of right mind to accomplish this, you will have no problems getting what you want. Also, I have just read of a 13 yr old girl who had RNY and had no problems with anything. So just prove that you can do it, and push for what you want. All the best to you!

Doctor Schauer, my surgeon has patients as young as 14. They need special attention but its never too young to get healthy. Just how old did someone say was too young?

At the time that my weightloss center submitted to the insurance company, I was 18 years old. My insurance didn't deny me, but they requested a psychological evaluation to see if I could handle the surgery emotionally. I think it's a good idea because I'm young and my hormones are still raging somewhat.
