Question:
Will antidepresants really help me?

I just posted a response to the other question on here, but really my question is....will antidepresants really help me with this problem. I am very concerned, and I have been having lots of problems post op. I had surgery 4-10-01 and now experiance extreeme body pain, this PMDD and I just feel out of control. Any suggestions are really really needed. Thank you    — MAGICG9 (posted on June 25, 2003)

One of the things about antidepressants is that when you're depressed and have that chemical imbalance, you don't think that there's anything external you can do to help. The meds actually do work in a subtle way. Try them and see how they work for you. Most who have tried them notice the difference more when they're OFF them than on. Good luck and God Bless!

I agree with Kimberly! I mentioned to my doctor that I was having problems sleeping. He gave me some samples of Celexa to try. I only take 1/2 a pill - 10 mg - but it makes a big difference, not just in my sleep pattern, but my overall sense of well being! Sometimes it takes a few tries to find an antidepressant that works for you. Also, they don't work overnight - it takes a few weeks to really notice a difference. It is well wrotht he time and effort to find something that helps you. Please don't be like my mom, who is chronically depressed and "tries to help herself". She has tried about every antidepressant there is - for about 2 days, then stops it because of "side effects" or "it's not doing anything". Ask your doctor - there are meds out there that really can help without making you feel loopy or sleepy!

I have been on and off anti depressants.. I spent over six years with out them.. When I had my MMPI test, it was found that I was depressed.. So the lady who read me the results, recomended me to get put on anti depressants.. I have been on them a few weeks now.. Why not give it a try, the only thing you have to lose is feeling bad.. Good luck.

I firmly believe in better living through chemistry! Before my surgery (I'm 10 weeks post-op RNY), I was 400 lbs of walking misery. I hated myself and my life, and the wait for my surgery to be approved and scheduled (about 7 months)was almost more than I could bear. My therapist suggested that I was suffering from depression, so I saw my PCP, who didn't hesitate for an second before prescribing Celexa (she chose Celexa because it's not associated with weight gain like some other anti-depressants). It really made a difference in my outlook--I felt like a new person, and was much better able to deal with the day-to-day problems that would have sent me over the edge befoer. I'm still on it, but I hope that as my weight loss progresses, I can stop taking the meds altogether. There's no shame in taking anti-depressants; in fact, if you're pre-op, depression is a valid co-morbidity that your insurance company should be aware of.
