Question:
Is is ok to go ahead and have certain tests done?

I am going to BTC in Ohio (after changing Dr.'s). I was wondering if it would be ok to go ahead and do my stress test and echocardiogram before my consultation. I already know through my previous Dr. that I need these tests because of my family history. My EKG was fine, but they want to do these just to be on the safe side (I am fine with that). Also, can I go ahead and see a Pulmonolgist...I have been a smoker for 13 years and I am fighting that smoking demon right now. Any responses will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance :)    — Schtina J. (posted on April 9, 2003)

Hi there! If you were asking about testing like your psych eval and stuff, I'd say yes, get it going. But stuff like EKG's, echos and things like that, I would say don't do it before your consultation, because your doctor will likely want the tests to reflect results as close to your surgery as possible so he knows what he's going up against when he opens you up. At least call his office and ask before you do it, or you may end up doing tests and paying for them twice. Good luck!

some people do get these tests on their own but most wait until the docs tell them. One thing to remember is that usually these tests are only good for a certain period of time. (30 or 60)days and you don't know when everything will come together for you. Good luck.

My surgeon's office gave me the contact info for the medical professionals they use, and I had my nutrition consult, psych eval (which was also required for insurance approval), and endoscopy done when I met with the surgeon for the first time. My surgeon was VERY impressed that I'd completed most of the consults. I was able to do the insurance submission right away, and now I only have to wait a matter of weeks for a surgery date as opposed to months.

Be careful of your time line here. My dr told me that all the tests have to be within 6 mos of having surgery,a nd the blood tests have to be no more than 30 days before surgery. Every Dr is different so I would ask.
