Question:
Is anyone else having problems with chipping, cracking and discoloration with teeth?

I am 15 months post op and am now having problems with my teeth chipping cracking and alot of dis-coloration. Is anyone else experiencing this? I have dental insurance but it will not cover alot of what I have to have done. I am talking $7,500 dollars or more. Can I get some of my health insurance to pay for part of this as it is a direct result of my Mal Absorbtion from RNY. I need some help and advise from everyone so that I know how to approach this problem with my primary care dr and my insurance co. THANKS EVERYONE !!!!    — Joi G. (posted on December 2, 2002)

Although I've not had problems with breaking, the color changed a little. Many others of my peers have had brittle breaking teeth (and bones), though. None of us took enough of the right kind of calcium for too many years. We're fixing it now, but it may be too late for bones & teeth.

I'm not having any trouble with my teeth, but my nails are splitting and peeling. I have never had any problems with them before but I do not get enough calcium so I am assuming that is the problem....why can't I remember to take my vitamins and calcium?????

I'm sorry for you. I don't have any answers but I had a dentist visit right after my WLS and he told me to use ACT fluoride rinse for now and forever. My fingernails have always been bad. I have had no hair loss - yet. I think everyone is different though. Good luck. Lap RNY 9/16/02

I'm taking calcium citrate religiously. However, I have found that I'm getting cavities after decades of "no new cavities" dental check-ups. My dentist hypothesizes that the change in my gastric juices may be slightly affecting my mouth environment. He prescribed a fluoride toothpaste for me too. No big deal, but I am going to get check-ups and cleanings on a more frequent basis now.
