Question:
I have a burning sharp pain to the left of my incision.....

It hurts like hell (especially when I sneeze, cough or MOVE!). I talked to my surgeon this morning and he said it sounds like an internal staple ripped a muscle. Has anyone had this and how long did it take to heal?    — emilyfink (posted on July 3, 2002)

Hi, Emily. I don't know about what your dr. told you but, I have the same pain. I too, thought maybe I tore a stitch because my left side of the incision hurts this way also. It hurts if I move a certain way, laugh, or sneeze. At times it hurts when I take a deep breath also. I am 3.5 months post op and have had this pain for about a month now. I think I'm going to call my surgeon and explain my symptoms to him. I came on here today looking through the library for anyone else who has this. I thought maybe a muscle was pulled. If my doc says anything different I will post again. Good Luck.

I have the exact same thing going on...for about a month now. My surgeon told me (over the phone) that he either accidentally stitched a muscle or bruised a muscle and it should get better. It is still uncomfortable (or maybe I'm getting used to the pain??). I will be seeing the surgeon on Monday and I'm definitely going to be asking him about it again!

This happened to me about 1 month post op. My Dr. said it was the nerve endings coming back to life. It does get better.

I agree with Randy. Just this week I have been having a sharp pain/cramp about 2-3 inches to the left of my incision. The RN told me it sounds neuromuscular, where the muscles are healing themselves and there are nerves running through there. She had me take 3 doses of Advil over a day and a half period in order to reduce the inflammation. Make sure you don't have a fever; that the area doesn't feel "hot" to the touch or is red; and that you don't feel a "firm" spot. These could be a sign of an infection.

I had my surgery the day before you, and I have the same exact pain. I've searched the library, and the consensus does seem to be that it is the muscles healing back together. I have noticed that a couple hours after I go for a walk it seems to feel better. I think we just need time to heal.

I had an open RNY about 8 weeks ago. I have this exact same pain. My doc told me it's muscular and the pain could last for 3-4 months. I'm really hoping it gets better soon cuz I have a cold right now and all the coughing, sneezing & nose blowing I'm doing really hurts.

I have the exact same pain also. My surgeon said that it was just sutures, and would take time to heal. I'm 13 weeks post-op now and occassionally I will have the pain, especially if I'm a little more active than normal.
