Question:
How long does lap surgery with gallbladder removal take.

I will be haveing my surgery on Jan 21st. It will be lap with gallbladder removal. I know the length of time it takes to do it can vary. If you had this kind of surgery would you please let me know how long yours took, and how it went for you. Thanks...Nancy    — Nancy S. (posted on January 1, 2002)

Nancy, I had a Lap RNY and gall bladder removal done on 2-19-2001 and it took about 4 1/2 hours. Though the Dr did say that it took longer than expected because my gall bladder was very diseased and falling apart.

Nancy: I would definately ask your surgeon what he/she anticipates the surgery time to be. It really varies -- It depends on how diseased the gallbladder is, the experience of the surgeon, whether he/she encounters any complications (ie. previous adhesions from other abdominal surgeries, etc.)... I had a lap BPD/DS (a more complicated procedure than the RNY and it generally takes longer to complete even without gallbladder removal) and my surgery (with gallbladder removal) was only three hours long. I didn't have any previous abdominal surgeries and had a bmi of 45. My surgeon is also one of the foremost in laparoscopic surgery in the country so his being able to complete all this in three hours time is not standard by any means. I would say the gallbladder removal would add about an hour to the surgery -- and if an RNY is typically 2-3 hours, then the gallbladder removal would add an hour to the surgery time, barring lack of any complcations. My surgery went very well -- I was so relieved to get that thing out because I had huge 1 cm stones in it! All the best, (lap bpd/ds with gallbladder removal, January 25, 2001, Dr. Gagner/Mt. Sinai/nYC, preop: 307 lbs/bmi 45 now: 194 lbs/bmi 28),

I had lap. w/gallbladder removal 3 weeks ago and it took a little over 2 hours. The surgery was complication free, the worst part was waking up..I was vomiting while laying on my back. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Good luck to you.
