Question:
Got a surgery date, but may be laid off...Help!

I finally have a Nov. 29th surgery date. But there is a good possibility that I may be laid off after 24 yrs of work sometime within the next couple of months.I am so stressed because I feel I will have a very tough time finding a job at my current weight (400+) and I am single and sole support. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!    — toni D. (posted on August 10, 2001)

I can relate to your problem...I was laid off at the ending of July but I am able to retain my medical thru cobra. I pay the whole premium ($161) and it is the same plan. Since I am unemployed the time it would take to recover is no problem. I wish you luck and god bless.

Cobra is extended to those who lose their employment. It is the law. They must extend (you pay the premium) this for 18 months. Good luck!

Most places of employment give you up to 3 months of insurance, just like when you were working, if they lay you off. After that, you can go with the Cobra plan, as everybody else has already told you. You need to check into this! I, too, might have this problem in the near future.

Hi Toni, how unfortunate to be forced into this kind of bind after working so long and having your surgery right around the corner! I'm sorry this is happening to you. As the others have advised, you will be eligible for COBRA if laid off...yes you have to pay your own premiums, but you will continue on the same plan as you've been on. You can get your ins. through COBRA for up to 18 months, if you need to. Also, if laid off you are eligible for unemployment benefits. Here in CA, unemployment runs for about 6 months. I know it is different in other states. But there is no question about eligibility if you are laid off. You won't get your same salary with unemployment but it is better than nothing. Hopefully also your company would give you some type of severance package if they lay you off after 24 years of service. Also if you're vested in any company plans, you'll get that turned over to you also. I wish you all good luck in this, Toni. God is good and things will work out. Hugs, Joy

Hi Toni, I've been on COBRA since the beginning of June and my surgery is scheduled for August 29. I even got approved after becoming a COBRA participant. It's expensive I know, because I pay over $300/month for single coverage, but to me it's all worth it compared to the cost of surgery. Be positive that all will be well and you'll be able to have this surgery. All the best.
