Question:
I am just about 4 weeks post op and nauseous all the time

Hi! I had open rny on May 9 and the first 2 or 3 weeks were wonderful, I felt fantastic. Now, I am always nauseous and hardly eat. For example today I ate 1/4 piece of toast with peanutbutter, 1/2 slice turkey, s/f popsicle, 1 tbsp. potato and 3 little carrots. I am full and nauseous. I called my surgeon and he won't be back in town until June 14. Did any of you experience this? If so, what did you do? Thank you for your advice and suggestions.    — Mary B. Call your surgeon's office back. Almost every surgeon leaves a resident or an associate in charge of on-call situations just like these. Let's assume you have the flu. If it's the flu, you should feel better within 24 hours. If not, call back and tell them you would like to know who is on-call for your doc's patients. If you do not get a satisfactory answer, call your primary care doc. Don't be sick until the 14th!!! Good luck!

One of the things that helped me was drinking Chamomile tea. It is decafeinated and I am not sure whether it is the warmth or what but it certainly helped me. Best of luck. Marlene

Hi Mary, sorry you are so miserable. I'm just 4 days out from lap rny, so I haven't experience to offer, but questions came to mind. You said the first 2-3 wks. were great. What were you doing differently with food then? Were you still on clear liquids or full liquids? Are you just now adding solid food to your diet? Are you trying one new food at a time, eating / chewing slowly, and waiting 10 minutes or so before the second bite to see how your pouch is reacting? I assume you've tested all the foods you mentioned eating above, not new all at one time? Some folks cannot tolerate even toast, is that gumming up your pouch exit? Peanut butter is high fat, have you had problems with that before? If your food was spread out through the day, not eaten at one time has this happened on a regular basis, no matter what you have eaten? Just trying to sort through what is happening. Of course if this has been going on, you stay nauseous all the time, you are throwing up, then you definately need to see you dr. or his alternate incast your stoma has narrowed and food cannot exit. Hope this resolves naturally for you. Best, Carolyn B.

i had that same problem, i used tea as well, but mine was caffinated. i drank iced tea all the time and it settled my stomach, water and crystal light made my stomach worse, but tea helped for the most part. good luck and it does go away. sarah

I also has the same problem the doc put me on a real strong nausea medicine and it helped make me feel human...I couldn't even eat what you have eaten....so i was getting a bit desperate.I'm 6 weeks now and need nothing for medicine so I hope it passes for you too. you could try going back on the lighter diet and see if that helps too...it did for me..of course I'm sick to death of soft foods hahahah good luck

Hi, I have just the answer for you... I too was sick to my tummy all the time and still have problems. The only thing that helped 100% was ginger root... You get a fresh ginger root in the produce section. slice about 6 half inch slices of the root and put it in 4 qts of water and boil for 5 min. then simmer for 5 min. pour the juice in a glass and put it in the fridge and sip about 4 oz when feeling sick. Honey, you won't believe how this ginger root is the answer... My doctor has even started perscribing it to his other clients... please email me if you have any questions... good luck, Lisa

Hi Mary....my story sounds muchlike yours....first couple of weeks I was fine and then, BOOM, nausea constantly. After a few days of it I went to the doctor and found out that I was dehydrated! Once they pumped me back up with fluids, the nausea was completely gone and everything was happy again! Look at your fluid intake and determine if that could maybe be the problem?? Good luck!!
