Question:
When would be the best time for me to have my husband take off work?

My supportive husband is allowed to take off from work for only one week when I have my surgery. My question is would it be better for me if he takes the week off after I am home from the hospital or better to have him stay at the hospital with me and go back to work after I get home for a couple of days. I will be having a open RNY at a hospital an hour away from my home which wouldnt make it that difficult for him to visit me after work a couple of days during my hospital stay. Thank you in advance for your advice.    — Patricia A. (posted on July 7, 2000)

I wished I had thought about it, My husband took off the week I was in the hospital. I now wish he had taken off the week I was out, I thought I was tough enough and could handle the pain, but I was wrong. My opinion, the week after, just ask him to call you a few times during the day, if possible to chat so you don't feel alone. Good Luck.

I would have him take off when you come home from the hosp. You have all the hospital staff to take care of you and you will want someone with you when you get home. GOOD LUCK!

You need his help at home the most.

I would say after you get home from the hospital.

He will be much more helpful to you after you get home from the hospital.

Hi There , If you can handle being in the hospital without him there, that would be best. My suggestion is that you ask your husband to begin his week vacation on the day you come home, especially if you have young children. Before you go to the hospital ... make sure that everything is caught up ... housework, laundry, stuff at the office. Make sure that you have lots of pillows and a comfortable place to be, with a phone close at hand. Good Luck!! Mary Anne
