Question:
When you were pre-op, did you start looking at the smaller clothes?

I just cant help myself. I still weigh 255, but now that my surgery is 100% approved and my date will be scheduled sometime in late summer has me walking into Victoria's Secret daydreaming lol. I cant help but take pleasure in what I'm going to look like. Do you all think this is unhealthy? Please share your stories if you have any. Thanks. Actually Erikka, I'm just the opposite, I have 14 days to go uhtil surgery, and while I'm "dreaming" about what I will look like, I'm afraid I'll jinx it by thinking too much about clothes, and sizes. My husband wanted me to start packing away some of my clothes now, he says I'll never wear them again. Winter clothes, and stuff. But I told him NO, If I get rid of them before surgery, I'll still need them.. I'm waiting until I lose my first 10lbs after surgery before I get rid of anything. Good Luck to you .. :-)

Erikka, I had to smile when I read your question. I was in the mall yesterday and was looking at every cute little outfit there was and imagining myself wearing them! It's so exciting to realize that finally all of those fashion constraints and limitations that have been a reality for many of us will finally be a thing of the past! Best of luck with your surgery. God bless.

Erikka, I think it is great that you are having a positive attitude. I am 4 months post op and I am still not buying new clothes. I have one pair of jeans in every size. I day dream about the size I will be when I am done losing, but I need to enjoy every stage of it. There is a lot to think about before your surgery and if this helps to calm you and ease your mind go for it. It might also help to buy something a bit smaller and make it an incentive outfit. Good luck with your surgery.

OMG! I do that all the time. As soon as I knew for sure I was having the surgery, everytime I got a "skinny" catalog I would sit down & show my husband everything I wanted to buy. And when I get a "womens" catalog, I just throw it away without even looking at it. Why not....not gonna buy those clothes again! I am 2 weeks post op & down 20 lbs.....skinny clothes, here I come! I don't think it is unhealthy....just planning for the future!

I'm pre-op too, and must admit I'm noticing clothes in store windows and fashion magazines a lot more, instead of just writing them off as something I'll never wear. But first I'll be working my way back down through my old wardrobe! I have some clothes I wore some 60 pounds ago that are still cute.

I don't think it's unhealthy, but I should caution you to not get too carried away. Not everyone looses as much as they hoped, or if you've never been thin, you may not have a very realistic idea of what you will look like thin. I remember daydreaming, while I was pre-op, of how great I was going to look, in this and that. Well, here I am, 15 and a half months post-op, and I didn't loose as much weight as I would have liked. On top of that, I had no idea how much excess skin I would have - all over the place. I'm waiting for insurance approval now for a tummy tuck, but there is no way I can afford to nip and tuck every place that has excess skin. There are just some fashions I probably will never be able to wear. But ya know what? I'm okay with that. Just to be able to go into a "normal" clothing store, and wear what most women my age are wearing, is enough for me.

Erikka, I had my open RNY 3/4/03. I went shopping for the end of season marked down clothes a couple of weeks before that. I got some great bargains on some designer clothes that were in a size that I figure I will be in, based on the average weight that I might expect to lose. The clothes were so cheap that I couldn't pass them up. Now I just have to get out of the mind set that I can only shop in the men's or woman's department!

Hey girl! I am so with you! And no way is it unhealthy. We should be able to enjoy the thought that after surgery we will look great. God knows we are gonna go through enough sacrificing to look that way. I mean, yes I do agree that this surgery is and should be mainly to have a healthier life, but I am so tired of the way some people(including other weight loss pt.s) act as if we should not even care that we will look better after the weight is gone. I have been made to feel guilty about that so many times during this process. I have been made to feel that It is shallow or that I am doing it for the wrong reasons if that is something that concerns me. I think those who say they care nothing about what they will look like after surgery is probably lying to thereselves and everyone else. I am approved with a surgery date set and I will not be ashamed anymore, I cant wait to look great! Go out and buy you all the skinny clothes you can pack into your car! Good luck to you! Lindsay

The summer clothes were on clearance right before my surgery so I splurged. I purchased 10 shirts ranging from 22 to 14 (I started in 28's). I will never forget my mom saying "Are you sure you should get the smaller ones?" I said "You really have no idea what is oing to happen, do you?" I would forget I had some of the shirts and when I found them, they were already big on me! I think its a great idea to purchase on sale winter clothes now for next year!....By the way- I am in those 14's now! WAHOOOO! Good luck to you!..........Karen (lap rny- 6 months post-op- down 119 pounds!)

This is so funny! I went on-line this weekend and requested catalogs from about 10 stores - none of them "fat girl" stores!! I'm just waiting for them to arrive so that I can start drooling over the clothes I have always wanted to wear, but could never fit into!! I'm planning on making a trip to JC Penney and Sears to bick up their Big Books too. Hey, why not dream!?! It makes me focus on the goal and is really encouraging and exciting.

I did look at smaller clothes, though I didn't buy anything. One thing I DID do was to organize the many sizes in my closet in the order in which I thought I would be wearing them. I had everything from 24 down to 14 (I was a 14 for about 10 minutes on Optifast in 1989!). That helped me feel a little bit under control about things. As I lost weight, though, I discovered that I needed to try things in the closet on a regular basis or I would lose past that size and miss the chance to wear something I'd been looking forward to! And eventually I lost way past my goal and then had NOTHING to wear. Woo-hoo. hugs, Ann rny 9/10/99 260/124

I think it's very healthy. I had the opposite reaction, however. I made a promise to myself that I would never ever buy anything again hoping it would fit. So, as I've lost weight, I've purchased whatever I liked the most in my current sizes. The surprise is that I kept having to buy smaller clothes! I'm now in a 12 and have lost 120 pounds! Even though the weight loss has slowed down, my skin is shrinking (I guess), and my size is still going down. It's so cool to go shopping and find that I can fit in smaller and smaller clothes. I think, for women, the shopping thing is REALLY important! So, go ahead and indulge, in the daydreaming! It's going to come true this time! That's the beauty of WLS.

I am SOOOO feeling this one, too! Everyday I dream about new outfits, stores I want to shop in, etc. Last time I was at the mall, I stopped in the Juniors section saw the cutest yoga/sweat pants that said "MEOW" on the behind. HOW CUTE IT THAT? I think this is my way of staying focussed and positive about the surgery. Oh- I am just started getting the Victoria's Secret catalogue, too. I say dream away, girl!!

I just happened to have bought 1 outfit at Lane Bryant in a size 16 at their end of the season sale last summer. I said that when these get loose on me I'll be so happy they will have to send a space shuttle to outer space to bring me back in as I'll be so happy. I know that we are doing/did this for out health, but the side effects are just as great. I have been wearing 4X or a size 30/32 (and these were getting tight), I can now fit into a tight 1X (4 months later). I am beginning to soar. :-) :-)
