Question:
Is being dizzy and weak normal?

I am 17 days post-op. I thought after eating soft foods this feeling of dizziness and weakness would go away. The pain from the surgery is much better now. I just want this dizziness to go away. Any suggestions or comments?    — Lori W. (posted on January 20, 2003)

Hi Lori. Please see my website for details (www.geocities.com/jaxsites/christie). I was told by many in my support group in addition to my doctor that the weakness and dizziness the first couple of weeks post op was normal. However I ended up back in the hospital due to major blood loss. I required a blood transfusion and another week long stay in the hospital for observation. I am not saying that is the cause of your weakness and dizziness, but I would suggest you contact your doctor's office just so they can rule it out. Ask them to do a blood count on you to check your hemoglobin and hematocrit. Good luck and take care.

I felt dizzy and weak with any exertion, and actually pretty much all the time, for the first 2 months post-op. I think the anesthesia plus the trauma of the surgery itself takes so much out of you. BUT, if you're having falling-down dizziness or weakness....passing out or blacking out, I would definitely bring it up to your doctor, as this is not normal. Hugs, Joy

How much protein in supplement form are you getting in? Since you're just doing/finishing soft, was that milk, pudding, yogurt--in other words, all carbs? Sugars can leave you feeling like MUSH. I'm not anti carb, but just anti-sugar. Have you started take iron that is not ferrous sulfate?

Yes, being dizzy is part of it. It took a few weeks before it went away. I would be walking and then start veering off to the left or right. If I wasn't holding on to something I would do that. I would also lose my sense of balance. Get up slowly. It will go away.

well i never thought it could be so when i started having it i went to the ER. they finally found out it was because my blood wasn't clotting. I was vomitting a lot of blood too. i had to have transfusion w/ vites. i was vitamin K deficient. spent a week in the hospital. passed out in the ER and got a nasty bump on my head from that. i couldn't do anything but lay down or else i got dizzy and passed out. it was bad but am a lot better now. so to be on the safe side get it checked out. good luck and God bless

Lori, I did the same thing a few weeks after my surgery and I was very dehydrated and my stoma was stricked... My Doctor put me back into the hospital and gave me IV Fuilds and did an endoscopy to open my stoma back up, I am doing great now... So Hun be sure to Drink your water and also Sugar Free Popcicles are a life saver... But I would still call my doctor if I were you, he can tell by just looking at you if you are dehydrated, but I can tell you a little test you can do to tell for yourself... Take and pinch and pull up the skin on top of your hand if it takes a few seconds to go back down then you are dehydrated.. I learned that from my doctor.. Good Luck To You Hun...
