Question:
Experiencing heavy lower back and leg pain at night...

This is not restless leg syndrome, but a deep aching that wakes me from sleep and then is so painful I cannot find rest again, even with otc painkillers. It ranges from the lower back through the buttocks to the thighs and calves. My labs were fine, although outdated now (due to be done next week). I haven't the slightest idea what to do for relief!    — Rhondi S. (posted on November 18, 2002)

It sounds alot like a herniated disc. You can ask your doctor to have it checked. An MRI will show you if it is a disc. For relief, anti-inflamatories, ice the lower back twice a day, gentle stretching (knee to chest while laying down), get referred to a physical therapist...thats about all they can do for discs. Sometimes they heal on their own, and sometimes they worsen. I've had 2 back surgeries for herniated discs. But have it checked-I could be totally off base.
