Question:
For the first time I tried some chicken, and got sick.

I am four weeks post op, so I tried chicken breast tonight. I only had about 1 ounce, and chewed it about 40 times (tiny bites), but got sick anyway. This happens about every other day as I experiment with working toward solid foods. I think I vomitted so hard I may have pulled a muscle, but I am not sure. Any thoughts?!?! I have heard that some people have a hard time with white meat. Try the thigh, it has more protein too. Good luck!

I had a lot of problems with meat the first month or two following surgery. I just found other forms of protein and continued to experiment with meats. Stubborn fool I am. Anyhow I am 7 months out now and havent had a problem with meats in a long time. I had steak for dinner tonight...that was the first time since surgery. Mmmmm good, and caused me no problems at all.

dont feel bad - I had a problem with chicken for a long time and at one year out - still have problems occasionally - last night for example :) - somedays it works and some days it wont - take a break and try again in a few weeks and make sure you are chewing really really well - and also for me - it cant have any skin what so ever, even if it has been cooked in skin and I remove it - I get sick.....just find what works for you :

I am 5 1/2 wks post-op open RNY. At 4 wks I tried a bite of the white meat inside a KFC chicken breast meat. KFC has always been my favorite. To my surprise I couldn't stand the taste of it. I had to spit it out. Every time I try chicken, I don't get sick or anything like that but I just don't like the taste of it any more so I stay away from it. Right now I'm trying to experiment on different protein things because I'm having trouble getting in enough protein and my doc doesn't approve of the protein drinks. So, if chicken makes you sick, stay away from it and try something else. Go back and try chicken again in a month or so and see if the same thing happens.

I had my surgery in Sept. 2002 and chicken still makes me sick, especially the skin. Try thin slices of deli turkey breast wrapped around cheese. Chew slow and swallow small pieces. It will eventually get better. Take care and God Bless.
