Question:
After 6 months post op, 1 year post op and after 1 year post op, at

some point are you able to drink some liquid with your meals, or are you NEVER able to drink liquid with your meals? I was wondering. Thanks.    — Judy W. (posted on January 31, 2002)

My surgeon said never. Personally, I tried a couple of times and I can't. It is uncomfortable.

All surgeons are different and you should follow what your surgeon has for you but mine lets us start drinking with meals after 6 months. He said if helps you to eat less.

There are 2 reasons not to drink with your meals ever. 1. You rush your foods though the pouch and system too fast and become hungrier faster. 2. You want the food to stay in the system as long as possible to get maximum absorbancy of the nutrients. When you flush them through the don't have time to absorb.

I SIP w/my meals. I cannot eat my food dry. It doesn't make me sick or hungrier. I probably drink 2-4oz in the course of a meal. A lot of people say it makes them sick but I know just as many people post rny who sip w/their meals w/no problem. Remember, there are as many opinions about how to do this as there are MD's who do the surgery and people who have had this surgery. Your doctor is always your best source of info. Good luck.

Hi there, I am pre-op and chose the DS (as I'm guessing the rude anonymous poster did too) for various reasons, including the fact that I like to drink a lot (just H20, lol) with meals. Best of luck to you in whatever you chose, and don't let those raving DSers get you down. Most of us aren't like that :P

Both my sister and I know that we are able to eat more when we drink. It does push the food down. Now do I drink with meals? I do not when I am home but when I go out to eat I do. I go out probably 1-2 times a week. I know that I need more food to be satisfied when I drink with meals. It is a personal choice but our objective is to lose the weight and maximize the use of out tool.

I'm pre-op but my surgeon recommends that after your haved chewed your food thoroughly, then take a small sip of water to help it go down. Now, sipping is not drinking, I know, but we are talking about the same thing, just different amounts. Nina

I was told by my surgeon that you should not drink anything while eating for a couple of reasons: 1) you should fill up on your protein 2) it will wash through the protein too fast before it is absorbed 3) basically I was told no drinking 1/2 hour before or 1/2 hour after meals. But I agree, your surgeon is the best person to ask. Good luck,

My doctor says to plan on never drinking with your meals. He is so serious that it is possible that he gave it up himself to prove to his patients that is can be done long term. I have slipped up once in a while when eating out and taken a few sips (out of habit) when there is water on the table and haven't felt good afterward.
