Question:
Have any of you made out a living will?
My surgery is next month. When my husband had throat surgery earlier this year we were asked at check-in time whether or not he had a living will. Have any of you done this? What does it cover, organ donation for instance? If you have a living will where did you go to get started? How far in advance does it need to be done? Does it need to be registered anywhere? My hospital didn't require it, but they gave me a quick form to fill out.

My hosiptal had a booklet that they provided me when I went in to do my
pre-testing for surgery. It explain everything and also had a living will
in it that all i needed to do was fill out and have two witness to my
signature. You might ask your hospital if they have such a booklet. Lots
of good info.

I made out a living will before I entered the hospital and gave a copy to a
friend and my sister as I was not comfortable giving a copy to the
hospital. They cannot, by law, force you to do it. It did bother me, but
I personally thought it necessary. I live in New York State, so I went to
the site for the New York State Bar Association where I found a form that
was free. You might try searching the web for your state's bar

I had wills, living will, power of atty, etc. done years ago. I'm glad it
was all updated and in place, but yes, it's a good idea to have your wishes
down in writing. In the recent death of my mom, it was important for them
to know at what point to let her go. She & my dad had discussed it in
length and there was no hesitation or doubt in anyone's mind exactly what
her wishes were. And as it happened, no "decisions" had to be
made. However, it was comforting to KNOW her wishes and be sure the legal
angles were completely covered, as well, so that they would be carried out.
