Question:
Questions about Carnation Instant Breakfast & Vitamin Choices

I was told i could drink CIB after surgery, but with NO ADDED SUGAR, so i looked at the box it has 20-24 grams of sugar in it, is that ok? or is there a No Sugar Added in a different box? Also, what vitamins did you use for your Calcium chewables, and Vit B-12 sublingual dots? Thanks    — Lynne W. (posted on July 25, 2003)

There is also a soft chewable Calcium the nurse told us to use. It's called Viactiv 500+D+K, I got mine at Target. You can get them just about anywhere, I got the Vit B-12 Sub at the grocery store.

The No Added Sugar CIB comes in a blue box. I will show sugar but that's the milk sugar.

I buy Twin Tabs sublingual B-12 dots at my grocery store. You dissolve them under your tongue. Not bad tasting and they dissolve really fast. They are soooooooo tiny. I am fortunate (I guess) in that I CAN swallow my HUGE Centrum multi-vitamins and I have recently switched to calcium citrate. These are HUGE horse pills. I take the two calcium citrates at the same time I take my multi-vitamin. Once in the morning and again at bedtime. I jut take my time taking them. I was using Tums EX, but the gang on here convinced me to switch. It was a hard sell. ;) I use the 'sugarfree' Carnation Instant Breakfast (in the blue box and ONLY comes in chocolate)EVERY morning with my protein powder. I use 8 oz of soy milk, an envelope of CIB and a heaping scoop of my tasteless but creamy smooth Pure Whey Protein Isolate powder. OR I use a whole peach in 4 oz of low sugar tropical fruit juice and my powder. Email me if you would like the toll free phone number for this great protein powder.

The CIB is in the blue box and comes in Chocolate and Vanilla. They are a little hard to find, but you can ask your store to carry it.

Heather...I didn't know it also comes in vanilla. Woohoo! I have never seen it anywhere I shop, but I sure will request they carry it. Thanks for the tip.

Caltrate makes a chewable calcium. It's chalky, but I go used to it. I also have some of the liquid calcium, but I really don't like taste. I alternate them as well as TUMS.

Well, you didn't really ask it this way, but I'm going to assume that you're wanting CIB for protein and calcium for your bones? CIB + moo is a lousy source of protein, but an excellent source of sugar, as you've noted. You might want to look at real protein, more like 30g protein to 4g sugars, made with water. Calcium should be calcium citrate. You can find it in wafers (but you need lots of them), capsules (swallow or open & dump), tablets or powder. Check the back of the packaging to be sure it is calcium citrate, though, ok?

Lynn, the Viactv mentioned is calcuim carbonate. It says so on the label and the only thing it is good for is it taste good. It is useless post-op. I continue to be amazed at the doctors and nurses that tell their patients to us it . TUMS is the same. You must have calcuim citrate.
