Question:
Generally feeling lousy. Any solutions for decreasing post-op pain, gas.

I am 5 days post-op open RNY and feeling pretty lousy, mostly gas. I really need some encouragement that this was the right thing to do. It really has been hard    — Margaret S. (posted on January 8, 2001)

Dear Margaret, My mother, in her infinite wisdom, said something very encouraging to me pre-op. She said, "Isn't two weeks of pain worth a long life of health and happiness?" Now that I am 4 months post and lost 75#s, I say, "YES!" Before you know it, most of the yucky pain will go away and you will be reaping all the benefits of the surgery. God bless!

Two of the nurses at BTC who had had WLS both recommended GasX for post-surgical gas pains.

I am 2 1/2 weeks post-op, and everytime I eat, I get terrible gas and belch for an hour. Today, I took liquid Zantac before I ate, used Beano on my first bite, and after I finished, I chewed a Mylanta gas tab. It sounds like a lot to do, but it worked. I will do anything to get rid of that pain. Good luck to you.

I had surgery on 12/28/00 - not quite two weeks yet. I had no idea the pain I had was gas. Once I figured it out, I started taking simethicone - extra strength gas tabs- at every meal & it worked. You can't OD on simethicone - it is an inert ingredient so ignore the box.

Hi Margaret, WaaaaaaaaaaHOOOOOOOOOO hey you are on the other side, that is reason to be positive. You are over the hardest times. I'm 8 weeks post come thursday. The first 2 weeks I had a tough time with eating and gas, but like anything else, live and learn small bites and chew chew and CHEW. That is when you are allowed to go to chewable food again and small bites. I have found that before I start to eat, I take a chewable pepcid and that helps me with both upset tummys and gas. Also time and healing is a very large cure of gas and the depression that seems to accompany this surgery for a little while. I ask myself, self what in heck did you do to yourself this time for the first two week it was bad. Now as time goes on, I am much happier with my decision to have WLS, and I am sure you will work out the paths that works for you. Congrat. on your sucessful surgery and all the closed doors that will open for you

Hi, I am now 10 days post op and I am having terrible problems with the air/gas pains also. I would place bets that when the surgeon was done with my Lap RNY, he inserted a fetus. I feel like I am pregnant! I can feel the gas bubbles move around as though it was an arm or a leg trying to find room. My Surgeon's office said that it is most definitely gas and I am going to try Phayzyme tonight. If you ahve any ideas, please let me know.

I am 6 weeks post op and had the same pain you described. When I talked to my doctor we determined it was caused by the pain killers I was taking. When I stopped taking the pain killers and switched to Tylenol the pain disappeared the next day. I also walked a little everyday. I hope that helps.

Walking and Gas-x, which is recommended by my surgeon as okay for RNY patients. I also found that I had more gas if I wore my binder. If you wear one, loosen it from time to time, especially after you eat. It is normal to have a lot of gas the first 10-12 days. I am about 3 weeks out and the gas has decreased 90%. Probably because your stoma is not so swollen, and liquids and food pass more easily.

I am 5 days post op and came to the site tonight to see what others have experienced with post - op pain. I see I'm not the only one so I do feel better.... yes misery loves company. I'm assuming mine is a lot of gas too. Back pain, rib pain, some pain when I eat. And the lortabs are not really helping. Good luck to you and everyone else.
