Question:
Too many vitamins? Is this possible?

Is is possible to take too many vitamins in a day? At 6-1/2 months post-op, what should I be taking? What do YOU take daily? All replies welcome. — blank first name B. (posted on May 18, 2002)

Yes. No. You can OD in certain elements. But if you're getting labs, that won't happen. You are taking vites specific to your surgery and that is OK, because they're being checked. You figure just to g et the calcium, we have to take 4 to 12 pills a day (depending on brand), and then if you do iron, you also need C, and then the two multis, and as time goes on, A, D,E, zinc.... So, if you are taking a pile of multis or something, sure you COULD OD in some of the elements.

My six month labs showed that I was overdoing it on almost ALL my vits. I was taking my two chewables plus three 'hair, skin, and nails' for my hair (following the directions on the bottle). The HS&N's have a lot of the same vits that my chewables have. My surgeon knocked me back to one HS&N a day. She told me that by taking just my two chewables that I would get in everything I need, the doubled amount covering any that I don't absorb enough of. I have a history of being anemic though and have been soooo tired lately, I am seeing my PCP next Thurs. for a full physical, including blood work. I'm curious to see how it will all come out, esp. my iron and B12 (which I also have had a history of being short on). Be careful :)

It is possible to overdo the fat-soluble vitamins - A, D, E, and K. We simply cannot get rid of them quickly, and they are stored in the endocrine glands - like the liver. (I think!) The water-soluble vitamins are not retained, the excess is excreted in your urine. Minerals are another matter - I'm not too clear on what gets retained, and what doesn't, but I do know that if the minerals are not in balance, there can be major consequences. My doctor has recommended (at 8 months out) that I continue taking my pre-natal chewable (NutriNate), and my hair, skin & nails (I take 1 instead of 3). And to keep smilin', Margie B :)
