Question:
Is Topamax safe for post ops?

My mom suggested I take Topamax for mood swings (that is what she takes). Is that safe for us? Is any one else taking these successfully? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -150    — KimBo36 (posted on June 16, 2003)

I have taken topamax both pre-op and post-op with no problems whatsoever. It is primarily used as an anticonvulsant in the treatment of epilepsy but it has been used as a mood stabilizer and found to be good for weight loss (I lost 26 pounds in 2 months when I first tried it three years ago). I find it helps tremenously with "head hunger".

I've been taking Topamax for migraines, per my neurologist, for the last few months. The only problem I've had is that it DOES suppress my appetite. So sometimes I actually don't get enough to eat (NEVER thought I'd utter those words!).

Hi! I take Topamax for my mood swings. I have had no problems with it. I take 100mg 4x a day. Good luck to you! Cheryl

I took Topamax for about 6 weeks to help deal with some overeating and head hunger issues and it really did the trick, but unfortunately it basically made my birth control pill stop working so I had to quit taking it. If that is not an issue for you I would reccomend it though it did make me really tired also, but you won't know how it will affect you until you try it yourself. Good Luck!
