Question:
Need advice on pain control hopefully without meds

I started taking codiene for back pain last year (on an empty stomach) and I'm pretty sure I have an ulcer. Now I'm taking Nexium which seems to be helping. Anyway, to the point of my question. I was using a weed eater around a pond yesterday and slipped on the steep slope. I kept from falling in but I bent my big right toe backwarks towards my foot in the process of not falling. I'm sure I have some codiene and Ibropropene left somewhere, but I'm afraid to take ether. I'm in a fair amount of pain but I can stand. But it sure is'nt pleasant. Anyway, is there anything I can do besides meds to control the pain? (Tylenal never helps so I don't buy it). I suppose I could soak my foot in ice water but I hate the thought of it. I'm sure others here pull "boners" and try to control pain without medicine.(I'm a kultz anyway) If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it. My pain is located in the big toe and part way back on my foot. It's a rather big area that hurts. I fear pain meds as they are to rough on my pouch. Heck I need arthritus meds and don't dare take those ether! Thanks.    — Danmark (posted on August 31, 2003)

Hi, Daniel: Have you thougth about alternating an ice pack with a moist heat pack every couple hours? That's what I'm supposed to do whenever I manage to wrench my back out. The thought of putting my poor arthritic feet in ice water just makes me cringe! LOL! Good luck, hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks to both of you! I am now trying the alternature cold packs, then most heating pad. What a difference! THANKS! By the way, I did buy a pair of steel toed hiking boots today. My guess is that IF I slip with them, I will go into the pond. Because of the bend in my "non-steel toed" working shoes, it allowed me to grip enough not to go in. Oh well, hurt my toe and stay dry... or save my toe and go swimming with a gas weed eater. What a choice. lol ;)

Daniel - I would also like to strongly suggest you see your doctor after an injury like that! Sorry if I sound pessimistic. Good luck!
