Question:
Buying smaller clothes pre-op

I am pre-op, approx 3 months. I am currently a size 30-32 ish. I was in Wal-Mart today and they had some plus size jeans on clearance for $5.00 each. I bought two pairs in size 24 (Wal Mart brand) and one pair of Just my size stretch jeans in size 24 ($11.00). I can just about almost wear size 26 JMS jeans. I was also in the Avenue a couple of months ago and saw some nylon, lined, wind breaker type jackets and matching pants suits, great colors for $19.99 (regularly $59.99). I bought a 26/28 and a 22/24. My job requires jeans tpye clothing so I will need the jeans and can also wear the windbreaker clothes to work. These bargains were just a little too tempting to pass up. Has anyone else bought in anticipation of losing the weight?    — Lisa S. (posted on July 13, 2003)

I did the same thing last Friday. I was in Catherines (plus size shop)and bought two pair of capris, a dress and two cute shirts on sale. I wear a 32 and was brave and bought size 26s. I saw a really cute red pants suit with a fitted jacket on sale for only $15.00, marked down from $75. I loved it! However it was a size 20 and right now I can't even imagine wearing that size again. I hope someday I'll look back on this and think a size 20. I was worried about fitting in something that BIG:)............Nancy

I've only purchased one "hopeful". I will be working at a Christian school in the kindergarden room this fall, and dresses/skirts are required. So, I bought a denim jumper dress in 1X (I'm 3X+ now) that I plan to use like a uniform - wear it every day with a clean shirt. Luckily its only 3 days a week, so I have time to wash it after wearing it a time or two. Surgery in just 2 weeks!

I bought a couple shirts that I wanted to fit in by 4th of July from Old Navy. The store is so trendy and I like the clothes in there, but never fit into any of them. The week before the 4th I was able to wear the shirts. Yeah!!!! I have also bought some jeans that will hopefully fit by the time school starts back up. I am tired of wearing stretch pants. When thereis that great of a sale or clearance I want to buy them knowing that I will eventually fit them. It also feels good knowing something that didn't fit now fits. My advice would be to buy something that doesn't cost a lot, but is timeless. Where I live we have cold winters and hot summers. I have to wear clothes that match the season, so it is a little hard to plan too far in advance what size I will be.

I am pre op until Thursday and I just bought a dress for our military ball it is a size 11/12. I am currently a size 3x in formal wear. I now have dresses for any size I will be at the time of the ball in November. The only size I was missing was this size I have from 3x down to 13/14. It was 40$ marked down from 160$ so I feel like I got a deal. Even if I don't wear it I can always sell it and get my money back for it. I don't see anything wrong with this as long as you aren't buying massive amounts of clothing that you may not wear for very long.

I was a size 24 and 3x before surgery. I was looking for some clearance stuff for my husband on Eddie Bauer.com and happened to look at the womens clearance page. I bought a denim jumper, a t-shirt and 3 v-necked cotton tunics in size XL. Boy, did I grow into them and past them quickly. I felt so good to get them on, and even better when I packed them away for my cousin who is having surgery on 8/7.

Not only did I buy some smaller clothes (18's/20's)smaller clothes, but I rolled the dice and 2 weeks before my surgery I started donating my clothes to charities and to anyone who could use a size 24 (my starting size). I recently purchased 2 size 16 business suits that were on clearance in anticipation of that size. (I am in an 18 now)

I am still a pre-op, but I have begun stopping weekly in the local Salvation Army. I can usually buy something nice for under $10., sometimes much less than that. They have many new (tags still on) and gently-used clothing, and I have been trying to get things in smaller sizes. Good Luck :o)

Hi! I'm 11 months postop and still have clothes in my closet that I bought pre-op that I haven't gotten into yet. Yes, it's a great thing to do and has saved me a lot of money. I went from a 26/28 to a 16 currently. I hope to lose about 20-30 lbs more in the future. I shop clearance racks all the time for bargains that will help out. Also, having clothes in smaller sizes is a big incentive to do well with your diet. I have been so proud to fit into some of the clothes I bought ahead of time now. It helps show your progress and saves tons of money. Just make sure and don't buy too many in one size, because time flies and the weight goes quickly. Jeans...I would just buy 3 pairs in each size. It's tempting to really stock your closet, but you won't get to wear them long enough. Good luck! Melisa RNY 08/15/02 -100 lbs

Try the clothes on regularly - maybe even once a week. I bought some clothes pre-op and hung it in my closet and sort of forgot it till I realize what I was wearing was hanging off of me (I started at 32-34 around there). I seem to blow by the 26-28 stuff. Darn - I had some cute stuff there. I just bought a couple tops from Lane Bryant clearance in size 18-20. I get way more compliments when I wear clothes that fits right. I still have some really big stuff that I love and hate to part with but I'm working on it. Best of luck.

I was foolish and turned down several bags of 12's and 14's from a cousin in law this last March, because I didn't think I would get there for almost another year! Now four months later, I am kicking myself because I am coming to the end of my old 'outgrown' box which only goes down to a size 16. And the one pair of 14's I did buy are already getting loose! So, I would say snatch up what ever bargains you can, while you have the chance...within reason of course...maybe even dare to dream a little.

Hi Lisa and all, I just wanted to give another perspective to this. I am pre-op (57 days to go) and won't allow myself to buy anything new. I just don't know where I am going to end up and would hate to buy something that I never get to. For me that would be failure. Silly I know, but it's how I think. Besides, I have a large size range in my closet already, as I'm sure a lot of us do. Good Luck to you! ~*~*~Terie~*~*~

I lucked out and happened upon a "bag sale" and spent $10.00 on a garbage bag full of clothes size Medium (a girl can dream!) to the size I was in at the time (18) by the way, I was in size 20 for what seemed like ever, then I was in a size 18 for two weeks, that's it, so until you get close to a certain size I wouldn't spend too much money! good luck!

Great subject! Prior to my surgery, I bought a dress and a skirt from Avenue on clearance in size 30/32 and they were too small (I weighed 399 lbs). After surgery, I tried them on about once a week until they fit and I could start wearing them, and now, 12 weeks and 68 lbs. later, they are getting loose on me. It was a comforting way to reassure myself that I was really losing the weight and shrinking, whether the scale was keeping up with me or not. Yesterday I picked up a couple of more clearance items in 22/24, though I also have lots of smaller sizes already in my closet that I blew through on my way up to 400 lbs. My favorite addiction, though, is SHOES!! My feet & ankles were so puffy before surgery, and now they look like normal feet again. I've bought 8 or 9 pairs of shoes since my surgery--somebody stop me!!

You might think this is funny. I work at a job where my clothes get pretty destroyed with holes from acid. I refuse to pay over $10 for anything I am going to wear to work. I happen to hit a huge clearance sale this weekend and I got 15 pairs of pants ranging from size 18 to 28 (I am currently in a 28) since they were less than $4 a pair. I figured, even if they sit in my closet for a year, I will use them to keep myself motivated :)

My goodness I thought I was the only one doing this! I haven't even made it to my first consult (four weeks away) but I've bought a few things that peaked my interest. My local thrift store has so many great clothes that cost very little! I currently wear 26/28 - 30/32 and have always wanted a certain outfit but knew it wouldn't look good on this body so I decided to buy it in a size 14 in hopes of something to look forward to during the weightloss process.
