Question:
I Want To Do Something Fun On The Day Of Surgery, Ideas?

I'm thinking of putting a sticker on my abdomen to make the O.R. Nurses and Drs laugh. "Handle with Care", "Caution - Open with Care", Smiley face sticker, etc. and someone suggested drying my personal area hair green and putting a sticker - "Don't step on the grass" - but I'm not that brave. Any other suggestions??    — Sally P. (posted on March 10, 2003)

When my stepmother had her galbladder removed, she put a sticker on her tummy that had her last name and the surgery she was having. She of course, did it out of fear of waking up without a liver or something. But everyone else in the family laughed our butts off.

ROFL. That's a great idea! However, I might be worried about making your surgeon and/or nurses go into a laughing spell. Your nose might end up in your gizzard! Let us know if you do something fun. Too bad that you will be asleep and won't SEE the reactions. lol

I looked high and low for an alien, as from the movie alien to spring up when the doctor pulled the surgical drape back. But to no avail I did not have time to find one prior to surgery. However, your local party store may have one. Personally I stayed home and gobbled vitimin C for three days prior to surgery. I was afraid I might get a cold or fever resulting in delay of my surgery.

That's HILARIOUS! I wish I would have thought about that! Maybe if I ever get to go for the plastic surgery. However, for you...... I think it would be great if you had something like....... OPEN WITH CAUTION, SUPER MODEL INSIDE THAT IS DYING TO GET OUT! Let us know what you finally did! Good luck!

Too funny! One poster said you would be asleep and wouldn't be able to see the surgical team's reactions, but if your hospital is anything like mine was, you may get to see their faces. Right after they started pumping my IV with "relaxants" my doctor came by. He said "There's one more thing I need to do before we start." He lifted my gown and the sheet. I asked "Are you verifying I'm female?" as he was making a big mark on my belly. He lost it (as did his associate)! He told me they have to mark the area where they will be operating ("Hospital policy"). Then he patted me on the hand and said, jokingly, "She's had enough drugs, stop the IV!" I didn't even plan on having fun before surgery, but let me tell you, this really worked on relaxing my nerves (or WAS it the IV?!?). Hope you come up with something good, please let us know what you do and what the reactions were.

I love it! I have a calendar called "Play with your food" that came with stickers of fruits and vegetables carved into funny faces. Since I'm an apple shape, maybe I'll put one of the apple ones on my tummy for surgery. If you go to orientaltrading.com and do a search for stickers, it'll turn up 188 different kinds.

I was thinking of putting a big bandaid on my mouth so I wouldn't say anything wrong. My Dr is sooooooooo cute I might just say the wrong thing. Seriously I have already thought to tell him to promise that when I wake up that George Strait won't be singing to me. If he is then I know neither one of us has done our job right. I will know that I have gone to heaven if George is singing to me. Please George! Stay away for this one...!

I was having a D&C and at the last minute that switch ORs because they needed the one I was suppose to be in to due a gallbladder removal...at the last minute I made sure they knew I was the D&C and not the gallbaldder patient. I would have felt bad for that MAN! Anyway now I am having my gallbladder out during my WLS so I wanted to write "don't forget the GB with an arrow". I was already in the hospital for my surgery and I found it a little odd that the nurse asked me what I was having done...after I answered she kinda stared at the chart...I asked her if that's what they had me down for? Of course, I got sick and didn't have surgery so now I have time to think of something funny to do for next time.

I know a girl that wrote in pen on her belly "WAIT!! Just one more twinkie!!" I thought that was funny. She said that afterwards, the doctor told her that it has the whole OR staff laughing their butts off.

It's so funny that you asked this because I thought about the same thing before my surgery! I have a friend who actually wrote this (with a pen) on her tummy, "Can you lift these while you're at it?" She had 2 arrows drawn pointing to her breasts LOL. My kids asked me if they could write something like, "This is our Mommy. Please take care of her!" I didn't let them, by the way. Other suggestions that friends made to me were, "36D, please!" "You HAVE done this before, right?" "Mt. Dew port goes here (with little arrow drawn to a penned-in black hole)." If you do decide to do something like this, be sure to let us know!!! LOL Have fun!!!!!

I thought of some more - "Construction Zone - Future Beauty Queen" - "For Sale - Extra Weight" - "Thank you" - "Future Healthy Sport Nut" - "Please return to size _?" This has been fun - will let everyone know what I do. Sally

What a great idea! And I must say you have a wonderful attitude towards your surgery. Its refreshingly different from the posters who are scared to death the day of their surgery. Personally, I like the "thank you", but the others have some very funny ideas! I think it helps to put the surgical team in a good mood...

These are funny and I hate to rain on the parade, but when I hear something funny often I laugh off and on all day. I would hate to write something funny and have my surgeon laugh mid surgery. I'd be afraid his hand would move wrong... or he'd lose his consintration. Just a thought. :)

My friend did something similiar for her gallbladder surgery and they did not appreciate it as the area needs to remain as sterile as possible.

I hope you come up with something funny - I think OR people like it, personally. Don't worry about the ink. (My son, who is 19, cracks me up by drawing eyes and a nose above his belly button. Looks like it is saying 'Ohhhhhhh!) Perhaps you could add a little red for lipstick! They will scrub and shave your abdomen before operating, and besides, skin cannot be made totally sterile. How do you think plastic surgeons know where to cut? They use a sterile marker. I thinks it's hoot that you want to do that, Once surgery starts, it's all business for the OR folks. You will be draped and they won't even think about it.
