Question:
Is there any reason I can't have a cortizone shot for my hip?

I have alot of pain in my back, right hip and right leg. I have been taking cortisone shots once a month and it helps. It also raises my blood sugar. It's been over 2 months since I've had a shot since I wasn't sure about taking one so close to surgery (Tuesday, May 9). I was sure I could make it without one. Now I'm not so sure. I'm having severe pain and sometimes can't walk. My hip seem to freeze up. I am now thinking about going to get a shot tomorrow so I'll feel like getting ready to go to the hospital. I'm just concerned about the elevated blood sugar and how it will affect my healing process.    — Tina H. (posted on May 4, 2000)

Do NOT have an injection of corticosteroids without speaking with your surgeon. I suspect he/she will want you to wait for now.

Hi, You do not want to have the cortisone injection prior to surgery. Cortisone,as you know is a steroid that reduces inflamation (and pain). Steroids also put you in an immuno-supressed state and will reduce yourability to heal and fight infection. You do not need to be taking non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs either (such as aspirin, motrin or anything containing ibuprofen, naprosyn .....any of the prescription NSAIDS. Get your Doctor to prescribe a mild narcotic type of pain reliever. this kind of drug should pose no problem to you surgery or recovery. And number one, please talk to the surgeon. He can help you.Good luck. My surgery is may 23.

Hi!! Nice to know a fellow pain injector! I receive injections in my hip back and foot. I have not been able to get them because my surgery is coming up but I try to keep going by remembering the surgery may releive my pain!!
