Question:
Severe pain in upper left abdoman just below the rib cage.

I have been in the emergency room twice. Admitted to the hospital once. Have seen my surgeon on numerous occassions with no diagnosis. I have had 2 Upper GI's, 2 CT Scans, EGD Scope. What could it be? any ideas?    — Shari M. (posted on February 23, 2004)

Great question. I had the same prob. Only had a catscan but they said it was "negative." Then I went for a PS consult and he told me I had an incisional hernia. I am awaiting my appointment with my bypass surgery to confirm. He said it may or may not show up on a CT.

IF YOU ARE HAVING PAINS IN THIS AREA IT COULD WELL LIKELY BE YOUR GALL BLADDER. DOES IT FEEL LIKE YOU ARE HAVING CHEST PAINS IF SO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT FOR YOUR GB. I HAD THIS VERY PROBLEM AND MY GALL BLADDER HAD TO BE REMOVED. THIS CAN BE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM NOT ONLY THE PAIN BUT THE GALL STONES. IF YOU HAD THE GBS THIS IS A SIDE EFFECT OF THIS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME [email protected]

It is not my gallbladder or my appendix either. They were both removed a long time ago. Having a colonscopy next week, that will probably be negative too. How do the doctors detect hernias?

I had the same pain for about 8 weeks after my surgery. It was a cramping pain almost like gas pain but always in the same spot. My surgeon checked me out and said that it was probably the plastic ring that he places on the old stomach to mark where it is for x-rays. Sometimes it causes cramping but usually goes away as you lose the weight. I don't feel it much anymore. Ask your surgeon if he uses a marker. Hope you feel better.
