Question:
HELP!!!Gas pains, bloating, smelly...running family out of room

I am 15 months post..having gas pains, bloating and just plain running my family from the room. I have heard not to eat carbs, diet sugars,or that I might be lactos intolerant...could splenda be doing it??? Any help would be "greatly" appreciated....Shelly    — ShellyJ (posted on June 13, 2005)

Hi, the experience I have with Splenda is yes, it does that to me in the worse way. I cannot use Splenda and if I have the hard candies with Splenda in them I am sick for the day with all the symtoms you have stated. I know so many people talk about Splenda but for me it's a NO NO. Take care and if you wnat you family back..ha ha stay away from the Splenda.

Shelly, you are not alone. Just this morning my 5 y/o son ran from the room screaming..."MOM!!!!" I don't know what to tell you, I haven't figured out what foods or reasons why, but thought you needed to know you weren't alone. :)

If I eat too much splenda then I have a problem with gas. Try cutting down. If that doesn't help I understand Devrom works wonders.

For me it is carbs in the way of things made with flour and foods made with natural sugar. I drink a ton of sugar free things with Aspartame (Crystal Light and Kool-Aid) and am not affected. Hope this helps.

Shelly, yeah, the splenda definitely has something to do with it. I have found Stevia to be an excellent source of sugar to use. It doesn't cause the side effects that splenda and the others did. Also, I agree with the first post - GAS X - is wonderful cause those carbs can get you too. I have recently been told by my dietician (cause I have been having several short-term memory loss) to stop using Crystal Light or anything with Aspartame in it (it causes memory loss - maybe not for everyone but definitely in my case) so be careful if you switch over to that. It doesn't effect everyone the same but if you start experiencing that and are NOT dehydrated then that might be it. Good Luck, Kelly

I am not aware, other than ancedotal evidence, of splenda causing gas and bloating. However, splenda is often used in addition to sugar alcohols in some foods. Sugar alcohols are notorious for causing GI upset so it could be that they are sneaking them into splenda containing foods and causing you problems... some sugar alcohol names to be aware of: sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, lactitol, and maltitol. There are others but I can't recall their names right now. They give me terrible gas and stomach pain if I eat too much (and "too much" for me is a variable amount). As far as treating the gas and bloating, simethicone (which I believe is in Gas X but you can get cheaper as a generic) is helpful for relieving/preventing gas. I also know people who swear by activated charcoal (available in a capsule so you don't have to taste the nasty stuff)as a remedy for gas/bloating. Good luck to you. Sid

Shelly, I am so sorry that I don't have any answers for you. I am only posting because I had to share how grateful I am to see so many others in my same boat!! It's nice to know when you're not the only girl that can clear a room!!! I have actually developed a tactic for when I can't get away quick enough....I get in the midst of a bunch of people and then act like I didn't do anything. I even try to look around 'accusingly' at the others around me. Of course this doesn't work if my oldest daughter is around, she scrunches up her nose and yells, "MOMMMMMM!" LOL

For the gas you can use a pill called devrom. It is an internal deodorant that helps with the odor. If you eat too many diet sugars can also create gas. Also gas-x helps prevent gas. Hope this helps.

This happens to me when i eat too many carbs. My husband is a dr., & he says in simplified terms, carbs ferment & turn into sugar. The gas (& henious smell) is an unfortunate by product. I just try to go easy on the carbs.

No problems with Splenda, use it for everything. But if I eat fat free Pringles, made with Olean, I run myself out of the room. LOL

I take Gas X with Mallox for gas pains and bloating. However for the smelly farts... I think it has to do with carbs.... When I am strictly low carb they don't smeel as bad but on days that I have eaten more carbs than normal.... welll... put it this way, my seven year old went out to a store with his father and bought me a Star Wars t-shirt that says "The Force is Strong with This One" 'Nough said?!

In my own case I agree with the carb, splenda, devrom posts. I ate too many grapes, and had more splenda than I usally do and all night ordorous gas. I usually don't have this problem cause I eat very little carbs, and splenda.

I would highly suggest garlic. I too was having the same gas and painful bloating. It was related to too many carbs but sometimes it was for no reason at all. So, I suggest watching the carbs and also to take a garlic pill everyday and/or whenever you feel uncomfortable w/ the gas or even if you think you may have overdone it. It does not make your breath stink or make you smell but it works wonders. Even if I am about to throw up because I ate too fast, I have stopped it from happening by drinking down a garlic pill. I swear by them!!! -20 months post-op open RNY 171 bls lost-
