Question:
8 months postop and severe/occassional abdominal pain

Hi, I am 8 months post op and for the past 4 days straight, I have been having pain on my right side that shoots straight down to my bottom front area. When it happens it feels like I can feel it flowing from side to bottom and it can be very painful. At first, I thought it was gas, but now I am not sure. I do still have my gallbladder. Are these typical symptoms of gallstones or even kidney stones? Please, any friendly advise would be appreciated and I will consult my doctor when they open. Just thought I would elicit the help of my fellow wls family, first. Thanks    — ncgal (posted on April 16, 2002)

It probably is your gallbladder. I know the gallbladder is on the right side of our abdomens--you said the pain is on the right side? When my mother had a gallbladder attack a few years ago, she thought she was dying. She said it was the worst pain she has ever felt, even worse than giving birth to a 9 lb. baby boy!

I probably should add (even though I'm sure you know this), get it checked out IMMEDIATELY. I never knew gallbladder disease could be so serious (since the gallbladder is basically a spare part) until a man from my mother's church died from it.

It may be your gallbladder of it my be a blockage. Durning Easter week, I began to experience some to the symptoms you are having. Three days before Easter, I had diareah (sp) real bad, which went away. Then on April 1st, I thought I was having a gas attack so i took some GasX which did not work. The pain became worse and worse, so I called my doctor. I described the pain to him and he said it sounded like my gallbladder, and if the pain got any worse, ran a fever, or vomited to call him and go to the Er. The next morning the pain was intolerable, so I went to the ER, took a CAT Scan, and a Ultra-Sound, since I was medicated with pain medication, nothing was found the think that the pain medication masked what was going on. Anyway 1 1/2 days later ended up back in the ER due to dry heaving, and vomiting, this time no pain meds were given, another ultra sound was given (could do the cat scan could not even hold water down.) The ultra-sound revealed something in the intestinal area, went for the Barum(sp) swallow, and it revealed blockage. Ended up having surgery to have the scar tissue removed. So with all of this being said. Get to your Doc, and have him explore all possiblities. I am 9 months post-op.

My mother had her gallbladder removed as well. I remember her saying it felt like horrible gas pains at first, but eventually got so bad she could not even move, and she has gone through a few labors as well as surgeries. I think you have the symptoms for it from what I understand, so I would ask your doc. Did they give you any meds to prevent gallstones? I know some surgeons do after the surgery because of the high percentage of people who get gallbladder problems after losing so much weight. Goodluck to you, and hope you feel better!!
