Question:
Who has had ER GB removal and WLS at the same time?

My gallbladder is full of stones and causes problems quite often. I am approved for wls and will have my gb out too. If I have to have emergency gb surgery will they go ahead and do wls at that time? or how can I get my scheduled surgery to be sooner so I don't have to withstand these severe attacks?    — Pamela W. I am in the same boat as you are. I have a gallbladder full of stones and am waiting for my wls. I have been miserable for about 6 to 8 weeks now, haven't had to do the emergency thing thank goodness and pray that I won't I only have to wait til May 14, I think I can hold out. As far as scheduling sooner you need to talk with your surgeon, Hopefully he will be understanding and get you in as soon as possible, My surgeon snuck me in on a day he doesn't usually do them so I feel greatful. In the mean time he's treating me with bentyl and vicoden for pain. Try very hard to stay away from fats, they'll make you more miserable, and spicey foods as well. Really kinda sux, I want to enjoy my last couple weeks, eating wise, but I guess this is a good start to a life longs habit change. Good luck to you, hope you get in soon and find relief.

Insurance companies will not pay for WLS without it being precerted. Unless it is a real emergent reason you have to have that surgery, which obesity and having a gallbladder attack does not constitute an emergency to an insurance co. They will not allow the ER Doc to take it upon himself and his judgement, to say, well since I'm in there, I will do the bypass. Unless they call your insurance on the spot, and the insurance gives the go ahead to do so. I agree with previous post, either try to convince your Doc to move up the surgery, or watch your diet seriously for the stuff you are not to have for your gallbladder problem, and keep the pain killers handy. I can kinda tell now when I'm headed for an attack. I just get a funny feeling in my stomach, and then I run and take 7 ibuprofen and it takes care of it right then before it goes into a full attack.

pamela, I had a plan in line. I had a surgeon ready to remove my Gall Bladder so I wouldn't continue to experience the extreme pains. I could then have WLS 1-2 months out. However, my surgeon scheduled my surgery very quickly because of the GB and I had both at the same time. Stress the pain and discomfort with the GB. If the surgeon gives you a date too far out tell him you will have the GB out by another dr.

Thank you, Linda! That's what I want to do. I am waiting a return call from my dr at this time. Wish me luck! Congratulations on your great loss! Pam
