What do all the various acronyms (e.g., NG) mean when speaking of tubes inserted pre-

and post-op. I'm pre-op and am curious about all the tubes I've seen referred to in various posts. Can someone tell me what the different types of tubes are, where they are placed, and how long they are typically in before they are removed?    — rebalspirit (posted on August 29, 2002)

NG stands for naso gastric. It is a tube inserted through the nose and reaches to the stomach. In my experience, it was placed in while I was under anesthesia. It stayed about 3 days. I was awake when it was removed. It's not the most pleasant thing. Everyone's experience is different. Mine didn't work properly, and I was begging the housekeeping staff to remove mine.

I love my doctor, he did not use any tubes. No drains, no naso gastric, no gastric tubes of any kind. I questioned him about and he replied that they were unnecessary. I believe him. My recuperation was unventful and quite smooth. Now I realize that the type of surgery makes a very big difference, which is why I chose the lap rny. No tubes!
