Question:
Pain on left side of back...behind rib cage

For the past few days I have been having pain in my back...it is staying in one area...left side...sorta behind the rib cage. I had my surgery 3 mths. ago, so I don't know if it is related to that. Has anyone else experienced anything like this before?    — Lisa B. (posted on February 11, 2002)

Yes, I did. Lucky for me I went for a massage 10 days out. My massage therapist found my left side of my back to be rock hard. She called the chiro and it turned out that one of my ribs was out of place. He said that it was probably from the laparascope. He explained that the rib went all the way around and that's why I was having pain in the back.

Please, please, when you have pain call your surgeon. This site is not to replace a sound medical dignoses. Some of us are reluctant to call because we don't want anyone to think we are hypochondriacs. But this is your life we are talking about.

Last year, when I had my surgery, I thought that the left side pain would never end. I used Icy Hot mentholateum and a heating pad for weeks. When I asked the Dr., he thought due to the retractor they used to move my ribs out of the way, it caused my ribs to hyperextend. We even did a urine test to rule out any kidney infection (it was negative). Though you should certainly inquire with your doctor, I found that eventually (and I do mean eventually), the pain subsided.
