If you are on a fixed income, have you talked to your local health department? They can probably get you into a low cost or free service! Check with your town/city hall!

Hi Ellen, thanks for writing. Hospitals are required, if they have a bariatrics program (wls) to have support groups if they are a hospital of excellence. I can't imagine that in a big city like Detroit that there is not a free support group for you. that is the first thing, call lthose big hospitals and check with them, also call your surgeon, they should be able to hook you up with free support groups. Many people who have wls are on a fixed income or medicaid/medicare and need support. I don't know if you have no insurance or little insurance, but it should also provide for counseling. It sounds to me in your question that you have more to discuss that just why you want to eat and are gaining weight. It sounds like you are wanting guidance through some troubled waters in your life. That is good that you regocnize your need and desire to work at it before the weight comes tumbling back on. You need to remember why you had wls to begin with, don't go backwards and what you choose to eat is a choice every day, it is a choice that only you can make. So make the right choice. Regardless of the troubled waters in your life right now, you can choose to stand up foryour health, you can choose to walk around the block and drink a nice cup of hot tea instead of the junk. You can choose to do the best thing for you by throwing away the junk ques in your life that will pack on the pounds, suger and/or fat items. All the counseling and support grouups will not help you activate the choice that only you can make. Please make good choices for yourself, and visit a library, there are plenty of reading materials for free at a library, read a comedy or something romantic and engaging, do something to supply joy in your life and help you activate the real needs in your life. When I am going through troubled waters, I turn to my Bible and pray. I do thiis daily, however, in troubled times I do it even more. My relationship with Jesus Christ is what keeps me moving forward, God is my hope and my Savior, and I choose to trust Him. If you would like to talk about a relationship with Jesus Christ, just let me know, I would be glad to share Christ with you. I had surgery in 04, so I am not far behind you. I still have to see my surgeon every year for a check up, and I still contact them when I have needs. You need to do the same. Take care and best to you. Patricia P

I'd suggest calling your local hospital. They may have their own outpatient clinic or be able to refer you to one. Many therapists will do sliding scale for those who need it... I have found that therapists who work thru a clinic tend to be the most able to work with you in terms of money. Good luck.
