Question:
Can drinking Unjury protein shakes cause an upset stomach?

I started dring Unjury protein shakes two days ago and find that either while I'm drinking them or after I get an upset stomach. Is it that my body's just getting used to them or is something else going on? Please help as I love the taste of the shakes and they do fill me up.    — butterflygirl72 (posted on August 10, 2008)

I have heard of many, many people (even people who have not had weight loss surgery) who get a stomache ache/nausea from drinking a protein shake, protein bullet, protein bar, including me..... it's not just Unjury, it's any brand. Something about the protein makes many people feel ill. I am sure other people will have great suggestions to help, and I would like to add my suggestion as well..... What I ended up doing, through trial and error is to eat/drink the protein supplement more slowly. I will make a protein shake, and pour a little in a disposable plastic cup, drink it, then over the course of an hour or 2, slowly drink a little more until I have finished it. If it's a protein bar, I cut it up in to slices, and eat one slice little by little. I usually take a drink or slice as I walk-by the kitchen during my daily chores/tasks around the house, or whatever.... May be this method might help you, it's worth a try.... It just seems like for some reason if I eat/drink the Protein supplement too quickly, all in one sitting, it always makes me nauseated. I hope this helps! :O)

You need to split your protein drinks into 6 2 oz "meals" a day for at least the next two weeks if not the next month. Marti in San Jose

I have had the same problem. As stated above, consuming the protein too fast makes me feel ill. I found the New Whey protein liquid, which has 42 grams of protein in 3.1 oz tubes, sipped on over several hours during the day works good for me.

Are you lactose intolerant? Or could yo be? I never could stomach whey...But I became totally lactose intolerant after surgey and then it was slim pickings on protein choices....I never gave up looking for one I liked, let alone didn't make me ill. EAS makes a lactose free whey/ soy isolate blend that is so far the only one that I liked (I love it now that I am used to the flavor) and it does not make me ill at all! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Muscle Milk by Cytosport...It is by far the best tasting whey powder ever...But...I can only handle half a glass in one sitting. It's supposed to be lactose friendly....but I think I might have sensitivities to some fake sweeteners too...so it might be that. I always take a probiotic before I have any protein supps (except the EAS Blend) and that often helps me....You could be lactose intolerant....Also...some things you might like before surgery, you will not like AT ALL after surgery...So don't stock up on anything! LOL

That also happened to me when I started drinking them. Since I knew it's a lactose-free shake (I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant during my preop workup) I thought it was the richness, so I tried mixing it with water instead of Lactaid milk. My stomach was no longer upset, but it then tasted kind of bland. If you're lactose intolerant ask your nutritionist about Boost Glucose Control. It's the only other one my surgeon's practice recommends for people like me, and I have to admit it's more palatible than the Unjury made with water. Added bonus - it doesn't upset my stomach! I will keep using the Unjury chicken soup and unflavored powder, though!

My protein shakes have digestive enzymes in them. Have you thought about adding a digenstive enzyme to your routine? You can get broad spectrum ones that help digest protein as well as carbs and fats. I've never gotten nauseated from the shakes, but I haven't had surgery, either. I've studied quite a lot, and it seems many people are lacking in digestive enzymes, partially due to the tendency to eat processed (dead) foods. Maybe you can do a little research on that subject. It's fascinating.

Hi Kari, I take the Unjury protein powder, I don't have any problems with it as long as I don't drink it too fast, it doesn't make me nauseated but it does make me feel bloated and uncomfortable if I drink it too fast. So my only suggestion would be to drink it slow and I don't know how big you're making them but maybe make them small and just drink them slow throughout the day, or try having a saltine cracker with a little butter on it with it, that's what my nurse suggested, sometimes that helps. Good luck

We get excellent ratings for tolerability (going down easily!) from both patients and dietitians. Generally our first suspect is the lactose in the milk. UNJURY has zero grams of lactose. You might also wait a few minutes after shaking or blending. If that doesn't work, please do feel free to call and we can try to do some "detective" work together to try to figure it out. Most of the time we can figure it out. Our toll free number is on the package and at the top of the website. Kind regards Jerome UNJURY (R) Protein
