Question:
Help!! I'm living in dif. country and having Weak spells, dizzyness, tingling...

Help! I have to diagnose myself, I had my gastric bypass in may of 2005, and moved here at the end of 2005. My doctors here don't know much about gastric bypass, and I am having some strange symptoms. I'm experiencing dizzy spells, just general weakness, and tingling, or numbness in my tongue, tips of my fingers, toes and lips. What is going on?? What vit. dif. could I have? I also had a baby (oops) 6 months ago and am wondering if that sucked the stores of vitamins dry. If you know anything that I could be taking, please help!    — orsuela (posted on February 23, 2007)

You should check your blood sugar. You could be hypoglycemic.

HI congratulations on your baby. You need to call your primar physician and ask for vit b12 to be checked. If you are deficient you can have a major problem especially since you are having numbness and tingling. Please get checked out quickly. Best wishes to you. Cira

you definantely need to do something, go to the doctor and have them check ALL your vitamin levels to see if someting is off, because it could be one of many things or a combo. i would also do some research about the area you live and find a specialist that is familiar with GBS and see them asap. check your sugar levels often, because as the other post said it could be low blood sugar. have your blood pressure checked too, it could be high causing those symptoms. please see someone asap because your life is not something you want to play around with. hope this helps, holly

Congrats on your new baby. The doctors really don't need to know anything about gastric bypass in order to determine why you are experiencing the symptoms you are experiencing. See a doctor and they should at least be able to perform blood work to see what's going on. You should not have to self diagnose. Also it might be a good idea to go back to taking the vitamins prior to your having a baby.

The symptoms you described sounds like someone who isn't taking their vitmains anymore. This is highly dangerous and can cause nerve damage so I recommend getting back on a prenantal vitamin to build those levels back up. You wouldn't want to live with the dizziness, weakness and what could potentially be much worse forever. It also sounds like low Iron possibly. You need blood work. Take Care!

Ursula, you don't have to diagnose yourself at all. You need to see a doctor. If they do not know what to do, they can pick up a phone and call your surgeon, you can find another surgeon in your nearest city maybe and drive there. You had the surgery, so get advice or go to one that can follow you up. Don't deny yourself proper care. You need to see a doctor that can help a wls patient. Patricia P

Aloha! As a nurse I was used to diagnosing myself. But I wasn't always correct. I have since given up self-diagnosing. I advise the same for you. As for your symptoms...It sounds like maybe a combination of low blood sugar and a vitamin B (complex) deficiency. Make some phone calls to find someone knowledgable about bypass. By the way, where are you? If you cannot find someone locally, please feel free to contact the coordinator at my program Anna Peters ([email protected]). She knows a lot about wls and can help you find help. God bless and best of luck.

I agree with the earlier post... B12 deficiency. Get yourself checked out soon and good luck! Sue

Tell us a little about your vitamin regimen. Bariatric beri beri is sadly way too common among us. That's thiamin (b-1) deficiency and it can cripple! As several have said, B-12 can show up that way, as well. If you have not been taking iron, I'd also look to that. You didn't say what country you are in. There are WLS docs around the world who are pioneers in our field that might be able to test you. If you email me privately, perhaps I can help you get together some info to take to your local doc. I've noticed that docs not from USA are much less arrogant about using whatever resources they can get, so there's a possiblity you can teach your doc what he needs to know to help you. Hi, I am 4yrs out, and was suffering with a lot of health problems. Low iron levels, monthly B-12 shots, hair loss the list continues. I had a hard time getting the supplements I need because they were in pill form, or just didn't digest. I found this wonderful product that I wanted to share with everyone because it has changed my health problems around completely. My hair is growing back thicker and fuller, my nails are stronger than ever, my latest labs came back with flying. Write me and I will share the information with you. Cynthia
