Question:
I am having intense pain after eating. I am 15 months out from RNY.No gallbladder.

I ate a salad yesterday for lunch and dinner, always do. However, I had INTENSE, gut-twisting pain this time. I also had some Sweet and Low candies with malitol. I was thinking that it may have been gas, but the pain was so intense, generalized in the center of the abdomen, and I cannot figure it out. I am afraid to eat, and dread the thought of going to the emergency room on Christmas eve. Anyone experience anything similar? Thanks, Pam    — pjwilsen (posted on December 24, 2006)

I would take two gas X and see what happens. Also use a heating pad. Also sit forward or lay on the floor and bring your legs up if you can. But if the pain doesn't subside please go to the ER.

Hi Pam! Sympathy on the pain, I had that a couple of times, no clue what was happening. Also got it after salad, the pain was so bad I thought a huge lump of undigested food was squeezing its way through my intestines, slowly. Finally something prompted me to take a swig of Maalox -- the pain vanished in seconds! I'm guessing that what I felt was indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, or whatever you want to call it. Because of our surgery, we don't feel that kind of pain the same way as before. I've had the same pain twice since, and each time a small dose of Maalox or a single Rolaids tablet cured it. Try an antacid, but I agree with the other responses, if it goes on too long, get thee to an emergency room! Never mind it's Christmas Eve, you definitely don't want to be the present the surgeon opens! (sorry, think I'm getting high on the smell of pine needles....) Hope you feel better, and have a Merry Christmas (or other holiday of your choice)!

If you had more than 1 or 2 of those candies with the artificial sweeteners, mannitol or sorbitol in them, its probably the candies. Try to do whatever you can to get rid of the gas and you should feel better. If you start showing other symptoms, call your doctor go to the ER.

Hopefully by now you are feeling better. I would bet that it was from the candy. That sugar alcolhol is not a good thing. You also might have just had a reaction to the salad this tine even though you have had them before. there might be something stuck in your pouch causing the gas. If the paid still exists today & it has not gone away after the gasx or maalox. got to er & find out. Not fun, but you don't want to take chances. Feel Better & merry Christmas

I have experienced this and did end up in ER- I was diagnosised with colitis. Stay away from hard to digest raw vegies like broccoli and cabbage. That does it for me. Some people experience it with corn. my surgeon warned me that this happens to some people. I was given some thing for pain to take if I experience it again and taking maalox as suggested is also good. But since I only eat those type of vegies cooked well now I haven't had an attack in 5 months.

How did things work out for you? Were you able to pass gas, it could have been a build up. Sometimes you have to just take some time and wait it out a little, and not eating, but sipping water or tea for a day or two doesn't hurt anyone. I have had some intestinal struggles this past week, and I think it is just the local bug. I react differently now to illness and I have to just be aware of when it is creeping up on me and take care of myself to get through it. The intense pain could very well be gas, and that means a change in your diet to give your digestion a rest. Be sure to get your surgeons advice, they MUST be in the loop about any imperfect situations you are going through. It has been 15 months, but be sure they know what you are going through. I usually email my surgeons office if I am going through something to update them and/or ask for advice. I usually just wait it out, lower my intake and it works itself out. Let us know how you are doing. Patricia P
