Question:
acid reflux

I was wondering if anyone has developed acid reflux after have gastric bypass. I am 2 months and 6 days post op and i have this terrible, terrible taste in my mouth and throat that tastes like bad eggs and i seen a commerical on tv and it was a side effect of acid reflux and i was wondering if anybody heard or had this. Hi Nikki, I am about 6 months post op and I will occasionaly get reflux if I lie down too soon after eating. Sometimes I will eat at night and then go to bed within an hour (sometimess less) and I can almost guarantee that if what I ate was not pretty much liquid I will have some reflux. I don't recall having this issue as long as I am seated or standing. The worst is when this happens after I've fallen asleep. I think with time you will learn what foods cause this and work around them. I also find that if I take some Pepto Bismol before going to bed this will definitely help. Hope this may be of some help to you or anyone else experiencing this issue after surgery. I have found that since my surgery each day is a new "learning" experience and that so far I have been able to overcome each issue as it has presented itself. Bob

Hi Nikki, I have not had that trbl..I'm 14 months out RNY but I take a melt in mouth Prevacid per my DR every day. I was told by many that this will be a life time pill. But I see here that DR's all have there own plans that differ..so I would check with your surg (DR).

Prilosec OTC works great for this, if its not too bad, you could take it every other day instead of everyday, I had it before surgery and it's about the same now as it was then.

My doctor has told me to take any chewable antacid. It works really well for me also. I too noticed that if I lay down too soon after eating is when the trouble starts. Good luck

I've had the problem really bad since WLS which was in April of 2007. Three doctors (including my brother) have said not to take acid reflux lightly because it can lead to esophagul cancer. I take a Nexium every day and do not eat within 2 hours of going to bed. I was also asperating the reflux into my lungs which were showing up as spots on my lungs. Anyway, since I've been watching my self the spots have disappeared and I've not had the reflux problem.
