Question:
Low Blood Pressure

My son is also having low BP issues, his is running 90/50 and 90/40's with his pulse staying in the 40's. He is lightheaded and has no stamina. He has lost 265 pounds in one year. I am hoping the family Dr has some answers. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks    — melon55 (posted on January 23, 2009)

Patricia, You don't say how old your son is but I would definitely get him to a doctor or a hospital ASAP. His blood pressure is in shock stage. You might want to let the ER docs know about his surgery and have them check his heart. 265 pounds in a year is quite a lot of weight to lose. You all will be in my prayers, vinnigirl, retired RN

Yes Patricia, I would get him to the ER as well, just as vinnigirl stated.. and do make sure that they are aware of his WLS, have them do check his heart and labwork, all of the labs,EKG, CBC, Blood chemistry Profile, liver and heart Enzymes as a few to mention. With his B/p that low and heart rate that low, I am certain he does have trouble with dizzines, lightheadedness and no stamina, that is dangerously low. Don't let the Hopsital blow you off either. Make sure you get some answers and take the name of his surgeon with you and number in case the ER docs want to call the surgeon. Best wishes and let us know how he is doing. He and you will be in my prayers. Blessings and hugs, Cora Shrum, RN

265# in one year is a whole heck of a lot of weight to lose so quickly. He will definitely need a complete workup and most likely a referral to a cardiologist asap. Marathon runners and elite athletes can have very low heart rates like that and it is normal for them at rest. But, for the rest of us, 40 beats per minute is just too low. He may have some lab values that are off that effect the heart, he may need a pacemaker. Could be a lot of things really that definitely need to be diagnosed by a doctor asap. Let us know. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
